Default Job research before applying for IEC

Hi all, wondering if I could get some advice regarding job research before I apply for the IEC program (hopefully the next season).

In essence, I am hoping to find employment with an archaeology company over in Canada. I have been working in this area over here in the UK for a couple of years now, and would like to experience Canadian archaeology. I have found a number of companies and individuals on linkedin, but I am unsure whether it would be frowned upon or seen as a waste of time if I send emails to companies asking quite general questions about the nature of work in Canada and whether similar roles exist to the one I have in the UK. Looking over the job hunting instructions page, it seems that companies prefer to be phoned than just emailed a resume. Would the same rule apply for all queries?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What harm can their be in contacting persons or organizations with general questions and an explanation that its not a job application but requesting more information until you are eligible to work in Canada.

More often than not, unless responding to an advertised job, face to face is better in Canada. Job fairs, trade fairs, conventions, knocking on doors.

A specialist skill is certainly easier to market. We don't have an abundance of pyramids here though, and anything that looks like it might be 'first nations' they lay claim to it.

I'd advise starting a dialogue over applying directly to jobs. You can expect to be dismissed pretty quickly if there's not a Canadian address at the top of your resume. But it doesn't hurt to try.

Making contacts and connections early on is always great. I did that a few months before I arrived and they told me to contact them when I arrived in Vancouver.
Within 6 weeks I got a job within my field.

In a field as specialized as yours I think that as much research as you can do in advance the better. I don't much about archeology, but I understood from what I heard that some kind of special licence is required and there are only certain (geograpohical) areas you can work, but I don't know anything beyond that.

Hello and welcome to BE!

Great idea to do research beforehand particularly when it's a specialised subject.

You may find this of use: Discover Archaeology | Canadian Archaeological Association / Association canadienne d'archéologie (lots of links!)

Google search with links to most Provincial Professional Archaeology Associations

Register of Professional Archaeologists: http://rpanet.org/

Thank you very much for the advice everyone, some really useful links in your post Siouxie!

Definitely in the research stage and just overthinking how much contact is good to make so far in advance. Will certainly try and start making some contacts.
