Job Offers.... Going crazy....please help
Hi
My husband and i have sent loads and loads of emails to companies regarding emplyment positions, but why have we not had any luck in receiving any replies (only the computer genorated ones) what are we doing wrong, what advice can anyone give in how to apply for a job, or where to find these jobs....
I been on all the sites, ie job bank, monster, workopolis.
We both are class 1 truck drivers but my husband is also a sheet metal fabricator (on the most wanted job list) this is the job which he wants to seek employment in.
Thanks all Tracey

Hi, my husband and I are currently in the same boat with looking for work. I am a newbie here and another forum member referred me to the Wiki section on how to apply for jobs in Canada. The impression I get so far is that you are unlikely to get anywhere without phoning to chase up your application status/knowing people who know people. I wish you lots of luck with your job hunting!

As the others have said, the Wiki is the best place to start and will give you good advice on how to go about finding a job in Canada - applying via websites is less likely to produce a response as Canadians like personal contact. But the Wiki will give you a step by step guide.
Also, I don't know how long you've been looking for but don't expect anything too soon - there have been people on this forum who have taken two years to find a job, and that was before the recession in Canada! Bear in mind you'll be up against lots more Canadian applicants at the moment with so many over there out of work, so make sure your resume (never call it a CV!) is top notch and you highlight any specialist skills. Any employer will need a good reason to go through the paperwork required to get you over there, and a wait of 6 months or so, when they could get a Canadian instantly and with no hassle, so give them a reason to want you.
Are you planning a trip over there anytime soon? Most people who get job offers tend to get them on a reccie trip when they can arrange to meet people face to face.
Best of luck!

It tends to be the Canadian way not to reply to E-Mails.
Like others have said you will probably have more luck getting out to Canada and knocking on doors. Canadians are polite and friendly when you meet face to face.

I did hiring at my last job and we never replied to emails unless we were hiring and wanted to meet the person and many companies do the same, not hiring or not interested dont expect much of a reply from them.

By the way, I've heard some people here saying "CV" and also some said that short US-style resume are accepted here as well as longer ones, CV-style like in Europe (3-4 pages is ok). Probably depends on the field where are you looking (mine was IT).

Hi
Don't give up on the e mail applications...
I have got my jobs by this method, and used it to move on, usually if they are interested I got a call in a few days, although I have had calls about 18 months after applying.
As for 'canadian jobs for canadians' it is a bit, but if you have the skills it doesn't matter where you are from.
I had my first job three weeks after landing,(appx 2 yrs ago)
I was hoping for a few months off...but have been in work since then.
I know the pay rate isn't good but try adeccos agency, or even a diy store to help the resume for canadian experience.
I was told keep the resume to two pages or they lose interest, It has worked well so far.
good luck
Jerry

That's because they are still stuck in yesteryear and use faxes. My local rep from the Yellow Pages seems to have all sorts of trouble if we communicate by e mail.

Re: Job Offers.... Going crazy....please help
we too are in the process of looking for work and it remains as our sole stumbling block, preventing us from moving out there.
it seems unwise to give up a pair of well paying jobs, even if they are in the UK, just to become unemployed in 'beautiful BC', especially when everyone is either making a work force redundant or have imposed 'hiring freezes'!
we went for a reccie a few months back and people seemed surprisingly upbeat and optimistic about the recruitment scheme of things. however, and despite the contacts and leads established when out there, and even with a few chats / interviews via skype since, we have nothing to show for our efforts thus far.
but.... you gotta be in it to win it.... and so all you can do, is keep on keeping on.
it remains true that the canadians very much prefer to hear a voice than to just read a resume (unless they state 'do not phone us'); it is also true that those you contact will hear from many people just like you, but who are much more closer to the eventual place of employment.
as much as i reassure wouldbe employers that i am a permanent resident of BC, i sense the person wondering, "so what the hell are you doing in the UK then?"
being out there, ready, willing and ABLE to work on a moments notice, holds far more credability than even the most qualified / experienced / gifted applicant who remains several thousand miles away, i think.
it seems that although my job seeking efforts will continue, little will be realised until i take that giant leap into unemployment. and so all this remains as ground work, until such time that i start to read that Canada is out of its economic slump and is hiring again.
good luck to us all!

Class 1 truck drivers are pretty sought after over here! What area of Canada have you been concentrating on? Or have you been looking all over? There might be more of that sorta work the further west you go!
My partner got over here through a company that already had an LMO for foreign workers so he just had to apply for his work permit once they sent him his LMO. He hit it lucky though as we kinda just stumbled across this company's website.
Just try everything though, use google, find truck driving companies, make a list and prospectively contact them, look the job boards daily, look on Kijiji/Craigslist, maybe place a job wanted ad on there. Someone will contact you eventually...do make sure you have a Canadian formatted resume and covering letter ready though!
I actually remember a company from a while ago that was hiring class 1 drivers, just checked their website there and they have a section for overseas workers, so they might be worth a try:

Good luck!!
