Job for economics major

Dear experienced ones,

I am an Economics Major/ Finance minor ABD. I would appreciate if you could suggest the best city/location for me to immigrate so that I can find job in Canada. I got interview waived and waiting for the visa to immigrate.

Thank you.

My background is in economics and the financial services job situation in North America (both the U.S. AND Canada) is pretty bleak right now with no prospects of improving in the near future. Sorry if I’m blunt, but it’s true.

Toronto is by far the financial services hub of Canada, so your best bet is to look for a job there. I don’t live in Toronto anymore, but I still have some contacts there and most tell me that the financial services job market is very saturated and quite weak right now. I think Calgary would be your next best bet, but most jobs there deal with the energy industry. Ottawa has some economic jobs with the government, but you have to be a citizen to apply. Vancouver and Montreal are no-no’s in this field.

In general, I find that employers in Canada have extremely specific qualifications in the financial services industry, more so now that the economy is tanking and it is an employer’s market. I think that Canadians are more particular about your education and employment background – i.e. they mostly prefer local degrees and local experience rather than foreign. It may lead to some frustrations and you might not get the job you want…
