Indian communities in Canada

Hey all,

This is something that my OH has mentioned. We are a mixed race family (indian/UK) and OH is keen that when we land we are not left without any contact from Indian communities. We were looking at New Brunswick as a preference, but after a bit of research, it seems that the largest Indian communities are in Ontario and BC.

Does anyone know of any communities in NB or even Nova Scotia? It may be that we change tack if there are none there.

Cheers all!

Can only comment on mississauga in Ontario

from my limited time there the % of indians and similar seemed to be very high . so high you'd be shocked !

and yes before the loons start typing that isnt racist its just an observation

if i can be aloud an abservation that is !

some would say its similar to central london as in very ethnically diverse but i'm not a londoner so i would have seen it from a different perspective

My FIL and MIL are from NB (live in Ontario now) but based on visits there and to NS, your only hope for an indian community would likely be in Halifax or Fredericton.....and close to or associated with a university.

There are some posters here who live in those areas and they may be able to fill you in more. We have friends who moved to Fredericton and they bemoan the lack of indian restaurant options in Frederiction.

NB? NS? Er, no, the natives will be poking your children with a stick to see if they're real. Racism shouldn't be a problem as you'll be able to establish an impression of brown people on the population of those provinces but, really, you're looking at the equivalent of taking a red haired child to China.

I lived for years with someone from Newfoundland which, I concede is slightly less cosmopolitan then NS. She'd be 40 now I suppose. She said that, when she came to Toronto, she was gobsmacked because although she knew from books that people who were not white existed, she hadn't seen one before and Toronto had multiples of them.

Halifax is the most diverse city in Atlantic Canada, google, see if you can find a curry to buy, not specifically an Indian curry, try Thai curry, Jamaican curry, any sort of curry. If you find one you can call the shop owner and ask what it's like to live there. NB is more of a challenge, finding an Indian in Canada who's been to NB would be difficult enough, finding one who lives there, is, I think, close to impossible.

Actually there are quite a few east indians and chinese, not to the extent of Ontario and BC but no stick poking will be involved. Not a single decent chinese restaurant but there are community groups here for those groups.

I personally work with 6 out of an office of 50.

there are a few Indian people here. You wont be a complete oddity and are unlikely to experience any racism (they seem to care more about what hockey team you support and if you like the local beer). As for a Indian community - there might be a cultural association at the university.

In a slight defence of my adoptive province......you would unlikely to be be prodded or pointed at in St. John's although multicultural it largely isn't. We do have two Indian restaurants, a Pakistani one and indeed an Afghan one. In rural Newfoundland, you would be a rarity, but likely treated well.

Hi,
I live near Halifax NS, and have an Indian colleague. From what I can gather, there is a reasonable-sized (but not large) Indian community in the area , she always seems to be going to various religious festivals, get-togethers etc which they organise.

All good observations there - I've managed to locate a Sikh society in Halifax, NS and will be speaking to them pretty soon.

Over here, a Euro/Asian mix is nothing new and doesn't even merit a sideways glance, but it will be interesting to see how it goes over there!

Many thanks all! :D
