Increase in shipping costs

Had a phone call from our removals company today.:frown:

The guy who has ben dealing with our removals was in a meeting at their head office yesterday and they were informed that there had been an increase by the shipping companies in their charges.

To cut a long story short, we were expected to pay an extra £433 approx 9% on our removals charges. This is due to fluctuations on the exchange rate and fuel costs. These are the charges passed on from the shippers to the removals company.

The removals company had already absorbed a proportion of the increase, but the salesmen were told that the remainder had to be passed on to the customers.

After discussing various issues with him I managed to reduce the extra payment to £300, which included removing the optional insurance on the shipping cost, (not contents coverage) which we were never told was optional.

His colleague from the local office was supposed to have sent an e-mail to me yesterday to let me know, the muppet sent it to Mandy's BT e-mail which she doesn't use now she has her Shaw e-mail in Canada.

Not happy as you can imagine, but to all those who already have quotes or are looking at being quoted, just a heads up that prices have increased.

Kev

Forgot to mention, the phone call was less than 24hrs before they are due to start packing tomorrow morning.

thanks for the heads up -- I was wondering how frequently the shipping costs vary. I did notice the part in my quote, where they say that prices can vary because of fuel cost variation.

My container will leave Paris on Monday, and it's supposed to leave Le Havre on April 7th. Let's see, if the movers contact me with a price increase as well.

Our stuff was already in storage waiting to be shipped in 19 March and we were told about 3 weeks before then of a price increase, what can you do but just pay, they have you over a barrel.

Depends on what the contract states.

Hi
That's quite a hike. We got quotes from various companies and the Rep from Robinsons told me that the shipping container cost had increased by £130 per unit....that's some difference to what you are being asked for isn't it? Makes you wonder whether the company is on the make out of the situation. This took effect from 1st March, I believe.
But I suppose, so close to the removals...you have no choice in the matter
Good luck with the move over

Contracts gave us a final price but with the addition of "unforseen Fuel Price increases" we knew about it, just did not think it would happen, never mind, it's done now, just and extra £400 lighter now:blink::frown::blink::eek:

Your increase is around the same figure as ours.
We're going from Glasgow area to Red Deer, so I would imagine that Edinburgh to Calgary would be a similar increase.

Re: Increase in shipping costs

Having spoken to a few people I know, the shipping costs are reviewed annual and they have actually decreased in pass years due to a number of factors. This year was the first year that it actually increased - our shipping company asked for a similar increase but negotiated on it and settled on @10% reduction.

I think that some companies will use it to milk some money out of clients but the costs have been known about for almost a month so if you book now they should tell you about the increase prior to accepting your booking.

You could always complain to BAR regarding it if you are not happy.
