Default If you could move again.....

Hi all,

My wife and I have been monitoring this site for some time and have read with interest all of your threads. One thing which I have noticed is people who have migrated suggest bringing as much 'household stuff' as possible. So I'd like to ask everyone here....

If you could pack up again, what would you fill your containers with and why?

Thanks in advance.

I would not bring a lot more furniture as we sold ours in the UK and therefore saved money on the shipping and bought reasonable priced ones here (e.g. good used stuff) so we didn't loose loads of money and it was lots easier, at least for us.
But I defo would pack all the little things, such as : can opener, broom, bucket, bottle opener, loads of towels, etc. ... as it is really expensive to buy it all new. Really should have thought about it before we gave it all away

I've packed once to go to Australia, once to go back to UK (the shippers came last week), and packing it all again to go to Canada is on the cards.

My advice: If you don't use it, don't pack it. I've hauled boxes across the planet and around Australia that I've never opened.

I've also noticed what I call the 'toaster problem'... Those things you need in the weeks that you're waiting for the shipment you end up re-buying i.e. cutlery, crockery, toaster, brushes, etc.
So, I packed a toaster from the UK to Australia - had to buy one when I arrived in Aus to tide me over = 2 toasters. Now I'm heading back to UK, so I've packed both my toasters, but of course I'll need another once I get there = 3 toasters... Then I'm going to Canada, So I'll pack my 3 toasters and.... well, you get the idea - no one needs 4 toasters.

Will a British toaster even work in Canada? And not disqualify the insurance if it burns the house down?

Yeah unlikely they would work, they fall into the "requiring 240v for heating element" category like hairdryers do.

Yeah, dollar store is cheap and that's what we ended up doing in the end buying from there but you get what you pay for. So if I could pack again I'd take my higher quality items.

I would have brought much more, bed and sofa, if only to use as spares and in the basement in the long run. We still would have sent stuff by groupage though as we only had a tidly house. We would have also brought the 1970 Dodge Challenger. OH was of the mistaken idea there would be lots here therefore cheap, no, there ARE lots here but much more expensive, neither of us think we'll ever be able to afford another one unless there is a decent lottery win.

We brought just about everything with us apart from electricals. Still had to buy more stuff here to fill the bigger house! Glad we brought it all though. As for buying stuff at the Dollar Store, I agree that you get what you pay for. Bought a can opener from there and it fell apart the first time I used it!

For what it cost us to ship all our furniture and belongings over was a lot less than it would have been to replace new once we arrived and I would rather have our own "used" items than buy other people's used items once we got here. Just personal preference.

This appears to be an old wives tale based on previous discussion...

If you are considering bringing a container, you might as well fill it.
