It looks like we're going to be landing in jan/feb, nothing like getting straight into it :).

I do love sunny frosty mornings though, nice and crisp. It gives me a real feel good factor when walking the dogs. I loath traipsing through 12 inches of mud each day, then spending longer cleaning the dogs off than the actual walk .

During the UK winter I am fine but I expect getting to work will be harder maybe in winter out there and also maybe more chance of getting sick during winter specailly when its your 1st winter there. Be interesting to hear all your stories of your 1st winter out there. Did you cope with it ok.

My first winter was a bad one, back in 88, I remember waking up, getting ready for work oblivious to a massive dump over night...when I went outside to jump in the car, I actually couldn't see it...I had so much snow I was 2 hours late for work, but I felt like a real canadian....car hood full of snow driving through tim hortons picking up my coffee during a roll up the rim season.

But never mind the snow, wait to you have yourself your first freezing rain...thats something that happen to me on the 401, my car was cocooned in a tomb of ice in seconds...that took me 30 minutes of scraping time to get out of.

My 1st winter....... has it finished yet??

I moved to Southern alberta with Shorts & Hoodies and enjoyed the Penguins biting my @rse.

I invested in Winter tyres & great Ski Jacket. Best 2 things I ever bought

Best thing about winter - Snowball fights.....Local kids have to wear helmets now!!

Where in hell did you find penguins?

I know Lethbridge is south, but it's not that far south. :p

Did you clean up the mess? Otherwise you wouldn't have been very popular at work!

Dont you dare say that. Im moving to lethbridge on the 30th June and I really dont want it to be any worse than Calgary has been the past two years we have been here. I dont mind the snow so much and freezing temp's but the ice on the roads scare's the pants off me:eek:.
One of my fave winter pass-times was to watch the SUV drivers spin out :p

I do tend to hibernate a bit over winter and there is way too much comfort food about (starbucks peppermint mocha) way too nice.
Hoping we get more chinooks in Lethbridge to get rid of the 4 " ice ive seen on the rds here.
Please tell me you do and its a lot milder than Calgary.

Yeah im a big cold arse, but the streets do look pretty covered in the white stuff.

Just be prepared for wind, lots of it.

My son lived down there for four years while attending U of L. Couldn't wait to get back to Calgary, the wind drove him crazy.

If at all possible do not get a house where your master bedroom faces west. He said their's did and the wind whistling and rattling the windows and rattling under the eaves kept he and his wife up many a night.

Just something to keep in mind.;)

Cheers
Steve

Thnx Steve. It looks like our bedroom window face's East, but our daughters face's West so will defo invest in some windbreaking trees.

I used to get waken up by wind a lot untill I stopped feeding hubby broccoli.

Depends upon where you will be staying.

Around Toronto the coldest for the last few years is around -25.

We just wore our UK coats, hats, gloves and scarves for the first winter (we arrived Jan 2004)

Since then I have thicker gloves, a selection of hats and scarves, winter boots, ski pants and a thick ski jacket!

But that's because since moving here I have started down-hill skiing and skating. I've also tried cross country skiing, dog sledding and want to try curling!

Driving around Toronto isn't too bad. This year we had a couple of big storms. Freezing rain is more of a problem than snow. The ploughs usually clear all the major roads overnight.

I have winter tires but most of my friends and colleagues don't bother unless they live out of town. Also 4WD etc would help but I'm not sure it would be worth it around here.

In fact since 2004 I have only had one snow day at the school I teach at.

If the cold is a worry be careful where you move too.

Hey,

The most annoying thing i found about winter... having these canadian people ask that question to me a million times.

I live in Winnipeg Manitoba apparently this is one of the worst winter places in Canada but if i am really honest the winter was not at all that bad.

I would walk the dog pretty much every day and every night there was only a couple of days where i didn't due to the cold. But this was very rare and when i didn't it was -50 with the wind chill.

The clothes I would wear was a T-shirt, a jumper and a winter jacket. My legs would be covered with a pair of thermals and jeans this kept me plenty warm enough although i wouldn't recommend standing outside for much more than 30 minutes at any one time because you might freeze.

I do believe every person is different and some are more prone to the cold than others so i am just telling you how i was but it's not the same for everyone.

Have fun when you get to winter this is important because it can drag otherwise if you hide yourself away from it.

When I went to Winnipeg for a short time they actually had a skin freezing weather alert flash across the TV....something to the effect that any exposed skin would get frost bite within 30 seconds.....trust me, its cold there and for a long time...

But for sure, people do need to learn to have fun in it...

:D
