How Much are you Paying for Heating Oil?
I have had two quotes today for filling up my tank - though it has been so long I am not sure what is what. So to anyone who has had a delivery recently - how much did you pay per litre?
Spank you in advance.

There is a government site from mother Canada for every eventuality;
http://www.fuelfocus.nrcan.gc.ca/price_map_e.cfm
Should be going down again in th short term as crude prices are once more below $100 a barrel....
Also this is a usefull guide;

Re: How Much are you Paying for Heating Oil?
I had hoped this would be another thread to get some idea of heating by oil costs. I mean the total cost per year (along with electricity costs for the non heating stuff) because I've been looking at property in NS and far more houses seem to have Oil Furnaces than other provinces.
Price per litre or how much to fill a tank doesn't say what the real cost is.
So far I have seen people refer to monthly plans and I don't recall less than $350 getting a mention. $4,200 a year....just for heating?

Re: How Much are you Paying for Heating Oil?
We paid .96/litre a couple of weeks ago.
We took over the existing Irving account when we moved in last year but searched around for better deals once in. We found the best deal to be with the co that supplied OH's workplace as he could get a discount. We asked Irving to match it which they did so we stuck with them and saved the hassle of switching. Doesn't hurt to haggle!
BristolUK - We heated 3400 last year with Oil - baseboard heaters. Just coming up to the year mark and total cost has been $3455. I was home with our 3yr old so 19 daytime and 16 at nights although I felt that the house never really got warm, we were just taking the chill off. We have just installed a wood burner in the main floor family room which claims to heat 2000 . Cost $6k (incl 30ft chimney and installation) plus $900 for wood. We think maybe 5 years for savings to cover costs. The big bonus however is that whole house now feels toasty warm when we have it on, in fact it's too hot really but then it's not cold yet so we will see when we hit -20?????? HTH
Oh - and we also had the last bit of the basement insulated and finished this summer. We had tape and bubble wrap insulation last year!

We got filled up a week ago and it was $1.0699 per litre. We have just had a bi-energy thingy installed though so hopefully we won't need another tank of oil this winter.

Re: How Much are you Paying for Heating Oil?
We have estimated that it should cost us around $2400 for the whole year for the heating oil - we have a large open fire in the middle of the house so that will heat us up during the evening and the days that I spend all day at home. I have invested in more jumpers and blankets and it's slippers all round!

Re: How Much are you Paying for Heating Oil?
Unfortunately the next year total was set back in the summer when crude was $140 a barrel and heating oil prices over $1.30 a litre, so I expect this years amounts will be over budgeted
4 or 5 tanks at 5-600liters a fill is not uncommon in Ontario for us, but we use oil to heat our water, which still works out cheaper than electric heat. Hopefully when we insulate the basement that will drop dramatically, but its amazing how many canadian homes are not all that well insulated. Its only recently (last 5 years or so) that heating oil costs have become a major concern.

And thanks for the other bits of info - especially the 10 month thing. It reminds me of the 'Rates'/council tax payments

One thing to keep in mind if you live in a rural area (as we do).
The power WILL go out from time to time. For several hours at a time. Possibly for several days, if not longer (storms or freezing rain taking out power lines) You should have a plan B. Parts of Ontario and Quebec were without power for three weeks back in '97 after the ice storm.
For that reason we keep our wood fireplace insert (not quite as good as a wood stove, but it was there when we got the place), and a generator we can lug out of the garage and back feed into the house so we can at least pump water from the well, get the blower fan on the furnace going from time to time, or cook in the microwave in addition to the BBQ (its VERY NOISY, so we don't run it continuously!). MY boss spent $15+k on a larger propane powered 10kW gen with auto switching for a seamless solution to power issues.
An affordable 5kW generator will not be enough to heat with electricity alone. Even the old electric water heater we had used to bog it down.
