from our experience....

we packed enough things into 50 cubic feet to later wonder "why they hell did we pay to ship x / y / z???" I guess for us, our new life equated to a new start, for which our old stuff simply seemed out of place!

Anyways, we didn't bother with any insurance at all. We didn't want the shippers to pack our stuff as they would undoubtedly go to excess when using bubble wrap, which of course costs money in itself, but also increases the sum total volume to be shipped!

A MAJOR conflict of interest make no mistake! You cannot accuse them of 'upping the volume' when they are simply looking to protect your valuables can you?

Plus with all the Ts & Cs involved, it seemed that in the event of a claim you would need an Act of God to find the party responsible for any loss (assuming they weren't claiming an Act of God themselves to excuse them of their failings!)

All of our stuff arrived as we had packed it. You do not need to be a genius to pack things appropriately. We didn't pay for professional packers, nor for the hiked up insurance premium for packing ourselves.

I would sincerely suggest that insurance in shipping, is like the extended warranty when buying a TV. Money for nothing and the maker of broad profit margins.

Incidentally, from personal experience: DO NOT USE SIMPSONS. Nothing they say can be trusted. From cost, to volume, to shipping time.

We used a 20 footer and we had a 4 bed detached with garage and shed and a 10 year old girl !!! We had room, we did slim down a lot but we shipped the normal..............2 big sofa's, lots of boxes something like 130. Garage Stuff including a HUGE 6 ft x 6 ft snap on tool box. 3 bikes, 2 double beds, 1 single beds, dressing tables, computer desk etc etc, hope that helps

We had a 4 bedroom house (very little from the garage). PSS did our 20ft container and there was room to spare, they were very efficient with the packing. Sounds like you'll be ok looking at your packing list. We started 'pruning' our belongings about a year before we left.

Thank you everyone for your help. We have started getting companies round for quotes on a 20ft container (and yes, we seem to be fine with our quantity of stuff - room to spare). So far PSS has come up the cheapest, and we have had good word of mouth feedback about them too. Unless we get a better offer, it looks like we will use them.

We bought a 20ft container for £1000.00 including Delivery. We then spent around 5 weeks packing it. I contacted a freight company and they arranged the delivery to Halifax NS, that cost £1500.00. I arranged a company to pick it up from the Port in Halifax and deliver it to our House in the Annapolis Valley, that cost $350.00 ( I was quoted £1500.00 in the UK for the same job ) Apart from Finding the container and sorting the paper work it all went pretty smoothly. Customs tore it apart in Halifax, nothing was where it was originally packed when we opened it.

When did this all take place ? because there is no way you are buying a container that is still seaworthy for £1000 today :unsure: all you get for that money is a hunk of junk.

May 2009 and it still had 2 years on its inspection cert. I can provide details of the company if you need them.

May 2009 you could buy a new 20ft box for £1350 + vat, A new box(one tripper) today will cost you £1850 + vat the world price of steel has jumped big style in the last year, I have boxes that are selling today for nearly 50% more than they cost new 3 years ago !!!Its been a great time to own containers. We dont set the prices we just follow the market.

Did you have to pay the Local Customers Inspection Fee? If so do you mind me asking how much you paid?

hi there , did you have to get your own agent in canada to do the customs clearence on the container on its arrival. and if so how much did it cost.??

We moved back in 08 and we had a 4 bed detached and moved lock stock and barrel. It cost about 5k I think, that was UK to Saskatoon, SK which is about 6 hrs east of Edmonton. WE got a removal company in Wolverhampton who specialised in immigration and they moved us door to door we had to do nothing but sit and watch !!!

thanks for that bit of info schumachergal, all info is well helpfull. just had a quote door to door 3.600 pounds so still looking around thanks again. hope the weather is starting to warm up for you.

It may have been a little less than 5k, but paying the extra for door to door is great and well worth it. I take it you are moving to Calgary? Weather is warming up the temp in the sun on the dial yesterday showed +32 and then we had a bit of a thunderstorm and it went down to +16, we have one of the sunniest city's in Canada statistically ! WE have been here 3 years and lover every min of it.:thumbup:
Something else to think about too is the garage has 240 volts that is easy to loop off with a breaker and then all tools will work etc
