air fares, house rental, car purchase, "bank bond" ($5000.00 had to be deposited for 2 years untouched so that I could receive a Visa card!!!), winter clothing, total about $25000. initial outlay. The best decision was the car purchase: a Nissan Sentra, low gas usage, no mechanical problem for 5 years, a real workhorse to a family of 4.

It cost far more money than I ever want to think about, what with air fares, staying in a hotel for a month while we found somewhere to live (we'd been renting a house in the UK for a year before we emigrated, and didn't want to rent any more once we arrived), selling off possessions that would be too expensive to ship, the shipping itself (via Pickfords for £3,500, can't fault them) and the bureaucracy.
But it was worth it for the feeling when we arrived, knowing that the day we had dreamed of for the seven years it took from falling in love with Canada to obtaining the visa had finally arrived.
Yes, it was nervewracking and we're still not completely settled six months on, but what a feeling - years of being in limbo are over, and we can start on the next phase of our lives. It might have taken thousands of pounds to get here, but I'm so glad we've done it.
