How many of you have......

......just up and left the UK to move to Canada without even visiting the Country first. We are planning on doing this but my partner is a bit sceptical.

Any comments would be great.

Thanx Sonia xx

Im sure lots of people have done this but it's not something I could ever see myself doing..we've been lucky enough to have family in Canada and have been to visit almost every year for the past 18!!! I love Canada and we all as a family feel really comfortable with it..that said..I could never take my kids to LIVE somewhere that i'd never been to even on a holiday!!!:blink:but thats just me:o On the other hand my brother-in-law and his family just moved to Australia, they went there on holiday many moons ago( maybe 20years) before they had kids of their own and now they love it and have settled really well...

dbd is one. He's been here for years.

There is an argument that it makes sense to visit first. The counter-argument is that a couple of weeks will show you what the place looks like but give you next to no indication of what it is really like to live and work here. I came to Canada about ten times on business in the four years prior to moving here. When I arrived I still had to be led by the hand by Souvette on very basic stuff. And I never got a job here, despite having many friendly contacts.

I have to admit, I would not just up and go to a new country unless I had a brilliant job offer over there... . I lived in Toronto for a year and absolutely loved it - that's why I am returning now. But even before I went the first time, I did go for at least a week's holiday to check whether I liked the place. But I am so not a risk taker.

I did. I was living in Belfast with my Canadian born boyfriend and one night after a few drink we thought it would be a good idea to move to Canada (my OH family live in Montreal). I hope you're putting more thought into it that I did. Now almost 9 years and 2 kids later and we are moving back to the UK this summer. However I don't regret coming here even though it has been tough at times.

Thanks for all your replys. Yes it is a big step to take especially with children. What my partner is wanting to do is go out in August for a month whilst our children are on school holidays, try out his new job for 3 weeks to see if he liks it and to see if we like Vancouver. Then return home, sort out what we need to and go back when all is done. x

Indeed. If I had seen Toronto before coming, or if I had had the airfare back when I did come, I would not be here today.

I take it your OH has a TWP..and if he has can you do that..I mean can you except a job offer, work for 3 weeks and then head home again:confused:

Elaine,

Can i ask why you are returning to UK? Also how you found Canada life compared to the UK?

It's hard to imagine what it will be like living in a different country. My concern is the children aged 8 and 15 both boys, if they would be settled, but hey we all want to try it, rather than stay here just wondering what it would of been like. x

Yes my partner can do that, it would be just basically work experience, if he enjoyed it then the job offer is there when we return, if not then we have nothing to lose.
