how far do you/would you drive to get to work?

Hi All,

Just out of curiosity....how far do you drive to get to work? Or how far WOULD you be prepared to drive to get to work?

I potentially may have a job that'll be about 1hr to 1hr 20mins from where I'd be living in Hamilton/Burlington. Is that classed as reasonable in Canadian terms? Not sure of the salary yet, so I don't know if I'd be worth while driving all that way yet.

I drive 70 miles each way. It takes an hour and a half in the morning, longer in the evening. If the job you're talking about is in downtown Toronto you're kidding yourself if you think you can consistently do the trip in 1hr 20mins.

One reason for coming to Canada was to get away from spending 3hrs per day in a car just getting to and from work. I work from home now and wouldn't go back to anything more than 20mins to half an hours commute.

On the occasions I go to Vancouver for work, it can take upwards of 2hrs to travel from Abbotsford to the city centre. Can't see how that's an enjoyable way to spend time every day.

My husband does a daily 100 mile round trip here in the UK - takes him 1 hour or so, depending on the state of the M5.

Oh that's easily doable. Mapquest says 43 minutes. Be aware though that there's a toll on the highway.

I drive about 20-25 minutes. Thats for about 30km, and there is little "stop go" about it, just easy progress on country roads. I read somewhere (on the net probably) that less then that and you take work worries home with you, much more than that and you are wasting your life away in a car getting stressed about traffic flow.

I know people who live near Cobourg who drive to Scarborough and Markham respectively, thats probably 1.5+h a day, one guy leaves early and works late to minimize car time. At the extreme end of the scale there is a guy moved to my street who works in Oshawa and drives every day, but hes only sticking out the 2h commute (he works midnight shifts, so it could be a lot worse) for the next couple of months until he retires. More than an hour and I would seriously think twice, its all about work life balance.

Jim's commute takes 30-45 mins by car depending on traffic.

(This is for a 7 mile journey! - according to Mapquest it should only take 20 mins. maybe if he started work at 5am)
This is pretty much the maximum commute time he'd consider and he often cycles instead of driving.

Like RICH and NotIank - I wouldn't consider commuting for 2-3 hours each day. It doesn't leave you any time/energy for anything outside of work.

But then I find driving very stressful so would consider anything over 20mins drive a no-go as I wouldn't be able to cycle it.:o If using public transport I'd go up to 45 mins. Which I suppose gives me a max travel distance of what - 10 miles?

Drive all of 2 Km now and can get a bus that will do it in 10 mins. Even better, the wife and I work at the same place and only need one car. We could walk it in about 30 minutes but are lazy.

Remember the wonderful Winter conditions as well when you think about your commute.

i've found its not so much the distance, but because the speed limits are so rigidly enforced and people stick to them so conscientiously therefore, the times on travel are vastly increased, driving from downtown edmonton to st. albert, takes at least 25mins not in rush hour, sorry not sure of distance, but seems to take forever for a journey that can't be more than 15km. either that or i am still not used to travelling across a big city. incidentally cbc just reported that cops here issued 400 tickets for speeding, on holiday monday on the queen liz 2 highway south of the city, puts some perspective on the above.

I like the commute into Phil's office - one cigarette away in rush hour !!! It'll do me after 3 hour round trip to pick him up in the UK

In the UK I commuted 2 hours each way - by car, train, and walking - fun. Now I commute 35km each way, and it takes about 35-40 minutes, depending on traffic. If the 401 is blocked up and I have to go back roads, it takes about 90 minutes, but I barely see another car.

So it seems that 45 mins to an hour is pretty accepable.
dbd33, you think 43 mins according to mapquest...so probably an hour with slightly heavier traffic. Doesn't sound too bad. I have got used to a 10-15 minute journey and its hard to adjust to longer commute times. As Notiaink says, its all about a work life balance at the end of the day.

Thanks all x

Re: how far do you/would you drive to get to work?

I used to do a 100 mile round trip from Wigan to Stoke that could take 1 - 21/2hrs or longer, thankfully i only used to do 3 days on 3 days off. Whilst in BC i drove back fron Vancouver to Pitt Meadows a couple of times in the rush hour and it took about 1 1/2 hrs but i found it less stressfull than the M6 i was used to, that said i don't think i'd want to do on a regular basis these days.

Re: how far do you/would you drive to get to work?

Mr B drives 55miles each way. It's necessary though, he wants to set up around here but earn money whilst he's doing so, and he needs to be far away to avoid getting caught up in "non compete" clauses of contracts.

In the UK his last job was 6mins on foot, the one before that was 45miles each way.
