How does your company hire.

Re: How does your company hire.
Here where I live it is the same, who you know and how many hours you have put in for free as a volunteer (aka slave labour) and first to get hired will probably be ex-military who leave with their pensions and are bored staying at home because that is the agreement they have with the town. Immigrant with no work experience here, forget it then! Like you say wish more people would read this before they throw in their good paying jobs in UK because they perceive Canada to be better.
Lets face it, the current world economy is hardly nirvana for job seekers anywhere.

We hire pretty conventionally compared to UK as well. Internal/External adverts, interviews and job offers as quickly as possible. Generally, if you're hiring, it's because that someone has left or that the business needs more people to support. So the whole Canadian taking months to hire someone thing, seems a bit pointless to me. It's not my personal experience either being hired or doing the hiring.
A tight labour market and a relatively specialised field means that recruiting for my team can be a challenge here in St John's. Last time we hired the guy that the outgoing guy recommended although we did review the other 30+ resumes. For the next hire, I may well, if HR let me, simply interview and hire a guy that worked for me in a previous company. He's had enough of working for government.

In the name of balance, the vast majority of posters past and present here, and Brits I know in the flesh, either immediately or eventually get a decent job. There are some who dont of course, but its far from all doom and gloom.

For me and the companies I work for, private sector, usually word of mouth, who you know, who you can lure away to come work for you kind of thing.

I know a company, a big international one that most of us will have dealt with at some point, that will only hire on the recommendation of existing staff. If they have a vacancy and can't fill it with a staff recommendation then they will just do without.

There is usually a weekly email that goes out from HR listing any new job postings, these are links to jobs on Jobvite, which is where most of the postings go.
We're encouraged to apply for any jobs we think we'd be a good fit for, if we fancy a change, and I'd guess preference would be given to someone already working for the company.
I think there is also a bonus referral scheme if you refer someone and they are hired and still there after their three month probation. So there is some incentive to persuade friends and family to join the company.

Re: How does your company hire.
Recruiting in our business is a nightmare. We have a permanent job ad on our website and also post current positions. We also use the Guardian and Linkedin, along with a vast network of personal contacts. Other useful ploys are hanging out at the smoking area at conferences and going out for a curry.
We're pretty well represented on ethnic and religous minorities and I think also on disabilities. One member of staff plainly has Asperger's and another appears to be completely bleedin' dyslexic.

I have, incidentally, found what may be the best Pilsener in the world.

I knew that would get you!
Just downstream from Quebec City is the Ile d'Orleans (the spiritual home of francophone North Americans - white ones, anyway). On it, in the village of St. Famille, is a microbrewery/pub/restaurant (Le Mitan). The brewery makes a range of beers. I only tried the Pilsener/Blonde, with a plate of locally made sausages, while gazing over the St Laurent after a 20km bike ride. It doesn't get much better than that. Even my missus, who doesn't like beer, thought that one was really nice.
The brewery is called Microbrasserie de l'Ile d'Orleans. I don't know how far the products travel. I've found one place in Gatineau that stocks them. They may be sold only in QC.

Pretty much true of our business the world over Jings - Notice you lot have moved into full commissioning stage now - Seems like you are taking every operations guy from the project I am on just now to fill your spots.
