I have read many times on this website temperatures go ridiculously low but today I was looking on the BBC weather page and it said in for the next five days in Calgary the warmest it would get to was 0 (which was today apparantely) but could go to -9 during the day (i think that was on Saturday) but then the lowest - usually night temperatures it would go to -29
I was just wondering how do you cope in those temperatures - i dont suppose you can wrap up at home with your duvet, you still have to go to work, school etc. Does it feel as cold as this or because its dry its not as bad!! I dont mind the cold dry days in Scotland but they only go to -3 or -4 at the worst, I dont think I have had anything lower. here is a bit of an overview how some Canadians adapt to the temperatures... http://www.ctv.ca/gallery/html/winte...5/photo_0.html |

Do you not have AC?
In Ontario and Quebec it's almost mandatory! Cooling bills can be higher than heating bills! |

Much rather spend the winter in a dry climate with some days at -30, with the occasional visit to +12. Than a consistent wet +5 to +10.

Re: How do you deal with the cold??
As the others have said, it's not as bad as it sounds (until it's below -25 and then you add on windchills BRRRRR!). Anything warmer than -18 is fairly easy to deal with. If you think that the kids at school are expexted to play outside unless the temp falls below -21 then it can't be that bad, you just get used to layering up and putting hats and gloves on.
I took the dog for a walk tonight and I had on Jeans, t-shirt, down jacket, boots, hat, gloves and scarf and I was warm enough, it was around -5 ish. |
Re: How do you deal with the cold??
we have been here a few months, loved the warm weather when we arrived and lived through the -40 etc before xmas, been real warm over the last few days and actually today at around 5 i was wearing no jacket
in the uk - no chance of not wearing ajacket in that temp, but like the other posters have said its dry  When you walk outside and your cheekbones freeze, thats different when you walk inside and bend over to take your boots off, well the tap needs to be fitted to your nose  Thermals become your best friends and so does my hubby's thermal top, that is why fashion is sooooooooooooooo not important :p |

I spent a year in Calgary. The cold was easy to deal with. The sparks from static electricity however were not... they drove me nuts.

Few people in Sask and AB have A/C. It's barely worth it for 2 weeks.

Those portable things are pretty noisy, you know. You could probably get central AC for about 3 grand.
if i can't find one with stealth mode, child will have to remain awake at night and fan me. |
