how do i get a car on a work permit
 

silly question , but , we have bought a house , with a mortgage no problems , agreed a price , bought and signed for , but getting a car is impossible , we have tried to purchase one with credit and the bank said we were only here 2 years so no way , is leasing a better option or just buy two outright ?? any ideas would be appreciated.

We had the same problem with a loan we could not get one for a second hand car.
We came over on a 3 year permit but got a brand new car on finance over 5 years from a garage in Newmarket as it happens as we are in Bradford just up the road from you.

Actually I'd appreciate an answer to this question too - although we're going to be in Edmonton... need to consider finance, lease or buying a cheap secondhand one outright cos until we sell our house we're knackered funding wise cos it all has to go on the mortgage...

Any ideas anyone?

We spent yesterday at Michener Allen auction - Calgary and there is one in Edmonton, we came away empty handed, there was some resonable stuff there and we have been successful in the past - hubby is just being VERY particular and we missed the bargain of the day when he went to get coffee :mad: The auctions occur every month - worth considering.

Just an idea: can you get a loan from the UK, on your UK history, perhaps with parents as guarantors?

I've heard some similarly daft things from UK banks (Barclays saying "we don't need your money, we've already got some" being particularly daft) but shopping around soon finds a bank run by a human rather than a chimp.

Is there no other bank that can sort something out? I mean two years credit history is a lot.

I am here on a student visa which converts to a work visa in april. In planning a bit ahead I went and spoke with Sun Toyota on Whyte and there are options- the dealership lends you the balance of the car rather than Toyota finance. I think it is certainly possible, but you will likely end up paying slightly more in interest.

It is worth going and discussing your options with a dealer as they are pretty motivated to find a way to sell you a car.

We have a house bought outright, but didn't want to buy the car outright as well, as we wanted to start our credit rating. So... shopped around, but no-one was willing to finance/lease to us ( sorry, 2 year student visa and my wife has an open work permit ). Eventually found a dealer who was prepared to finance us through chrysler finance. Helps with the credit rating. We also managed to get the insurance on monthly terms. which also helps.

Needed our capital for emergencies, so didn't want to use it if at all possible.

We got a loan from the bank that provided our mortgage (HSBC). From memory we were limited to a pre 2001 car (?) and would give a max of 21k (we went with about 14 in the end)

Thanks guys - i'll look into those options. I guess our mortgage will help with the credit rating so we might be able to get some finance... we'll just check it out and see how it goes

We were told mortgages don't count towards your credit score - hard to believe as for most people it's your biggest debt, but that's what our realtor said - except credit union mortgages, but it might just be BC.

i was told this by Scotia, but HSBC said they did...so who knows :D

Whats mad is I had no problem getting a mortgage from Scotia or HSBC (at the time, HSBC was much better rate. Scotia penalised me for being on a work permit). I had no problem getting a car loan,,,but come Credit Card time, the only credit limit I could get was 1k....hows that work. They'll lend me over 300k, but not more than 1k credit limit.....madness!

We were told by our credit union that because we had a line of credit it wouldn't count towards our credit score in the same way a mortgage would.
