Default How can we find company that offers jobs on TWP?

Hi all,

my husband I are keen on relocating to Canada but are now at a total loss as to wether we should try and find a job to go over on a TWP or if we should hire a immigration consultant and go over on a PR...but then we´d still not have a job.
We recently met up with a consultant from Willis&Brazolot and are not sure if we can trust the guy. (Yes, we have read all the threads referring to them but as the opinions are wildly varied we are still none the wiser.)
So now we are considering going to CA on a TWP. The main part of the problem is that we just cannot seem to find companies online that offer jobs to overseas workers! My husband is a chef in the Army with 22yrs experience and leaves the army next year.
Does anyone know how to find companies/restaurants/hotels that are willing to take on workers from oversees?

Any help is hugely appreciated, ta muchly in advance.

Hi,

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find a company that is prepared to go through the extra hassle to hire a foreign worker - you simply need to job hunt as normal and hope somebody thinks you're worth it! Have you read the Job Hunting section of the Wiki?

Having said that, any particular reason why you want to go on a TWP? If your husband is a chef then can he not apply as a Skilled Worker? That takes about the same amount of time but is much more secure - you'd get PR straight away and have all the rights that brings, whereas a TWP ties you to one employer and can be very risky (i.e if you're made redundant or similar). Most people would always recommend that you go via SW rather than TWP if you can.

Good luck.

Hi christmasoompa,

thanks for your reply. Our main problem is that we live in rented (Army) accomodation and when my husband leaves the Army in May next year, we can only stay here as long as he´s waiting for a pending visa. The alternative would be to move into another house, just then to move again a few months later when we go to Canada. For various reasons that is just not possible.
So we really need to be in Canada by say Oct/Nov 2010 at the latest. And in order to achieve that, hiring a consultant seems to be the best option.
Aaaaarggghhhh...this is all so frustrating!!!

Why do you ned to hire a consultant? You can fill the paperwork in yourselves (you have to do that bit anyway). We thought we needed to hire a consultant to be able to do it, but you don't.

All the consultant did for us was type up our hand written applications and give us false advice (we didn't have the internet) we wish we had saved some pennies and lots of stress A consultant doesn't make an application any faster. IMO Best thing to do is pop a PR application in the post and apply for any job possible in the hope someone will want to do the paperwork for a WP if you want to get here faster.

Yes, but a consultant won't get you there any quicker - why do you think they will?

They'll be able to help you make sure you've dotted all the i's and crossed the t's on your paperwork, but it won't speed the process up!

General rule is to only hire a consultant if you've got a difficult case - criminal record, medical issues, interesting things with dependents, etc.

Otherwise, following the process is fairly straightforward and their are a lot of people on this site who can help.

Totally agree with the previous comments about hiring a 'immigration consultant'. They will not get anything done or processed any quicker - that's a fact. And YOU will still be the ones gathering all your docs together, the consultant will just then fill in the forms for you and charge you a hefty price for it. My advice is to print off the skilled worker application forms and accompanying booklet, have a thorough read of it all, sleep on it, then look at it all again the next day. It's really not that bad, just a bit scary looking at first.

Good luck

Hi all,

thank you so much for all your advise. The reason we are thinking about hiring a immigration consultant is that we hope the whole thing may be easier as they should know what to send to whom and when and what it needs to look like...if that makes any sense at all.
But we will definately look into the forms that need to be filled in again and see if it is feasable to do it ourselves. Thanks again everyone, your help is much appreciated.

The guide and forms tell you what to send and there is only one place to send it. On BE you may want to use through the search function and find out the varying degrees of success people have had with these consultants.

Other than the criminal record, we had all of these + a court hearing, did our own and found it to be quite straightforward.

Any employment agency can help you get job interviews, but none can help you get a job. Just sending someone for an interview is no use if its the wrong fit. Recruitment agencies deal with the employers all the time, help match suitable candidates and don't charge the candidate (that's illegal) for their services.

Anyone wanting to get work would be better to keep pounding the pavement or sign up with a recruitment agency or two.
