Is it true that in the winter when there is loads of snow outside, you are typically confined to staying indoors? Or do people still get out and about have fun etc? What do people generally get up to over the winter periods?

It's just that people are trying to extinguish any thoughts I still have of possibly going to Canada by typically painting a negative picture.

Depends where you go and what you like really...
I myself lived in Toronto for 25 years and yes it gets cold and lots of snow. But I enjoy it and love to ski and play ice hockey...so there;s no reason to keep myself in.
I know people who have emigrated and embrace the Canadian winters.

In Toronto when there are major snowfalls - the roads etc get cleared quite quickly. Remember you are talking about a country that is prepared for this kind of thing. People do go out - i must admit that a car is a necessity though.
I am in the UK now and have been so for 2 years, and I miss the Canadian winters - believe it or not.. I cant wait to get back there.

Surprisingly, life does go on in the winter in Canada. You accept the challenge that winter brings and make the most of it (ski, skate, skidoo, snowball fights etc). If you cant do this then there are probably better places in the world for you to live!

Generally we don't get loads of snow in Calgary. The prevailing weather dumps it onto the Rockies, which are an hour or so up the road :)

We're an outdoors type family (running, cycling, hiking, skiing,skating etc) and without a doubt we get out more here than we did in London (UK). Yes it can be cold, but invariably the sun shines and the air is fresh.

When it is too cold or crappy, there are plenty of excellent (olympic class) indoor facilities too, happily with a complete lack of "chavs".

Most canadians are totaly housebound during the 6 months of total darkness that is the canadian winter. That is, unless you are old and frail and a drain on resources, in which case you will probably find yourself getting lots of fresh air while perishing on your very own ice flow. :rolleyes:


There are however one or who of us who escape by skiing, skating or shovelling outside, or taking part in the usual array of indoor activities in nice heated indoor areas. However, if you really need to go golfing, on a real golf course, then some travel is probably required if you live in most of Canada.

Am guessing the winter time is when most babies get conceived too, all that indoor activities as someone put it? :D
