I like Kingston. I'm not sure of the job situation but it's somewhere I've visited often and it is certainly the most picturesque of the 3 cities mentioned by the OP. Of course, that doesn't help if you need to work and can't find any.

Kingston has been voted the happiest city in Canada. Must be all the wacky baccy. I think it's a dump but then most Ontario towns are. I work with people who live in and around the city and they love it.
I liked Hamilton when i spent a couple of days there, same with Guelph. Finding a job will be the deciding factor I imagine. Once you get one lined up then that's where you will be happiest.

Yes, odd isn't it. Not what i was expecting at all. Princess Street and several of it's cafes were dirty and smelly. I can say several as we walked into a few and walked out again. The streets were grubby.. i wasn't expecting to like Hamilton at all and was pleasantly surprised.

I went to Kingston twice last year as I have family there and really liked it.
It sort of gave me a similar feeling to York back here in the UK. Not exceptionally busy or too much "happening", but has it's historic charm and is pleasant to sit in a patio on a sunny Sunday with a cold beer.
The only thing that was bad for me is that I was 24 and looking for something a little busier on a night. but for the OP as a family man there are more than enough restaurants and pubs etc to keep you busy and I'd say it seemed like a decent place to raise a family.
However I was there on holiday so I can't comment on the job market.

Kingston's a beautiful beautiful city. I haven't been to the other two places, but I have been to a bunch of towns and cities around Ontario and would move to Kingston in a heartbeat. It's got a soul!

I know right...very odd
J-A-UK
Kingston here ......
Plenty of jobs I'd say - I'm always hiring and my daughter (aged 19) has switched and changed jobs to suit herself
Crime is low - Road system easy - 2hr to Toronto - 2hr to Ottawa

Stoney Creek is not too shabby...loads of new subdivisions, and it's a nice alternative to the Hammer. St Catherines is another option I guess for the OP...wine region on the way to Niagara Falls

I have driven from Toronto to Ottawa numerous times, and I can assure you that Toronto to Kingston IS NOT 2hrs, unless of course you are doing 200km/hr on the 401, to which am sure the numerous OPP cars on the way, will be more than happy to take your away for a week
Toronto to Kingston is about 2 hrs 40 mins in "normal" traffic. It's about 260 km so if you were driving at 200 kph you'd get there in an hour and a quarter.

Oh....it's you, no change there then. Love you too brother. The poster I quoted said Kingston to Toronto is 2hrs, don't know how he came up with that?
I am guessing if you start in Kingston and head to Trenton, that is 1hr, Trenton to Oshawa is another 1hr, and the Oshawa to TO is another 1hr depending on where in the city you are heading without no traffic
How is the reno work in the house...all done now then?

It's improbable in the extreme that Kingston would have the best nightlife, what's the name of the equivalent concert theatre in Kingston to Hamilton's Copps Colliseum? Where in Kingston is Elton John playing on his current tour?
(The idea, btw, of willing being in the same room as people who went to Queen's gives me hives. "That's nothing, I went to Queen's" they say, relentlessly.)

Stoney Creek is part of Hamilton, a medium sized city with good transit links to Toronto. Guelph and Kingston are small towns, albeit ones with universities.

Hamilton also has an excellent public transit system, it's an hour away from Toronto and 40 minutes from Niagara. 2 streets dedicated just to pubs (apart from the hundreds of others scattered around), pubs on the waterfront, great restaurants, nightclubs and excellent concert venues. There's a good arts scene, lots of free festivals, parks and things to do.
