If I was close I'd meet up. What a good way of helping you through a sad time.

Hi
Sorry to hear about you being homesick, but I was thinking about it you should start a thread on here or something? You know who is homesick and how you got over it. Having something to do and aim for will help you to get over it, but at the same time dont get stuck in the house on the net, get out and about meeting peeps!
Hope you get over it soon!

not sure if this will help an peeps

But have you tried facebook to look for groups in your area
I have managed to hook up with other mums in the area, not just expats

Also getting out of the house helps us and although i do miss my mum and friend alot, i can speak to them at weekend ;)

Hope it helps

Sorry you are feeling homesick.

I think it probably happens to all of us at some point.

I am in Calgary (have been here since April 06), and still have the occasional wobble.

I would be happy to meet for a coffee or drink or something at some point

Hi Silverbug,

For what it's worth I'm sure it'll get better. I'm in SW Calgary, moved here in late June. I'm happy to meet up. I don't work so a coffee during school hours works for me but I could also do evenings.

Re: Homesick

Well, I'm free Mondays (apart from school drop off and pick up and after school swim lessons  ) and I drive so location is not really an issue. Apart from my local area, the main malls and downtown I still don't know Calgary that well but given a location I can usually (with the help of google map) get there.

What do you do Silverbug? Have you managed to meet people through work?

Hi there

I think we have all been there and done that!! So don't feel too bad. I know when it sets in it's hard to shift. I am in Calgary - live in the Kensington area and work downtown. I would be in on a meet up - it's always much nicer to share our wobbles!! A wobble shared is a wobble halved!! Am free after work and at weekends.

Hi, we (3 kids, 8,10 & 16, hubbie & I) came to Calgary on 24th August. Have to say none of us have had even thje tiniest hint of homesickness yet. We just watch BBC news & gloat! However, that doesn't mean I don't sympathise, honest.

We don't really have much in the way of family in the UK & the Internet makes friends seem just as close. Do you have a blog? It's a really nice thing to do, both for yourselves & your family.

I have evening shifts for the next few days though & then loads more evenings, so probably not able to make a meet but will be there in spirit. Feel free to PM if you like.

What do you do here?

Hi Silverbug,

Sorry to hear that you are homesick. Its pretty hard going sometimes, especially in the first few months. It took me a good 6 months to really get my act together and even now I have the odd day where I just miss popping over to have a cuppa with my inlaws. I've been here since Aug 07.

Have you thought about joining the Calgary Newcomers Group? As the name implies its for newcomers to Calgary and its for women of all ages and all backgrounds. They have loads of different groups that meet up regularly. There are a few brits but I've found that the majority are from Canada.

If you want any further info, I'll be happy help. Just pm me.

Hi,

I am Susan who asked months ago for a meet up- Little Tasha replied, she lives in Silverado (Cal) and I live in Lake Chapparel, and I hope she doesn,t mind me saying, we have been a enormous help to each other and had good laughs.
we would love to meet up with you, homesickness, and sheer lonliness gets to me for sure, and the nieghbours clsoing their garage doors too quickly, gets me down, but this is a great city, and I am enjoying it a little more everyday. Saw the newcomers details in my welcome waggon ppack ( got it last week 3 months after moving in) Sounds a great idea, should I take the plunge?

Hi Susan,

I have found the newcomers club pretty good as I am part of the Moms and Tots section. We meet up everyweek and also have a Moms night out once a month which is usually a really good laugh.

The Newcomers club has a load of different groups ranging from the Moms and Tots (North and Central groups) to Hiking groups, dinner clubs, theatre going and loads of other ones that I can't remember. If you want to meet people, its certainly one way of doing so.
