Guess I got lucky then..... and it is only a small concern who I work for.

We run a small Engineering plant as a family concern and I know that we work with our employee's but we do have that agreement that when we need overtime then we need it as our machines need to run 24 hours straight sometimes. They are quite happy and so are we.... But as I said it is down to choice of what you want from your new life.

My husband works in IT and he gets 15 days and started on 15 days. It will go up to 20 days when he has been there 10 years, which I hope doesn't happen.

He can take unpaid days if he wants to.

When I say that I mean long chunks of leave. The odd day here and there will probably be OK at most places, just dont count on taking two weeks at once.

If you are planning on being a social worker with the Ministry, forget the four weeks. You will start on three (maximum) and only get that after a years service. I only get 17 days after five years (plus stat holidays).

The first IT job I got in BC gave no holidays for the first year, then 2 weeks after 1 year. I took upaid leave though. In my present tech job I get 3 weeks. It was recently announced we can't take more than 2 weeks without authorisation from a manager. I would say 3 weeks is probably average with most tech companies. I think there is a general move away from the U.S. model of all work no play.

I say you only live one life and quite frankly 2 weeks or 3 weeks sucks in comparison to UK leave so maybe i will stay here LOL !!!!!!!!!!

Best idea. Canada is worth more than just holiday entitlement. As I said before it is whatever is priority in ones life are, shame though Canada has so much to offer opportunity wise but we need to have people who wish to emigrate for the right reasons...... Good Luck

Definitely a wise decision if it means that much to you. You need to have a lot of good reasons to go through all the stress, cost and upheaval of emigrating so if something fairly minor is going to make you want to go back home then it's probably best if you don't go in the first place!! You need a lot of pros to outweigh the cons of being away from friends and family, and all countries have their negatives so you need to have clear goals and reasons for moving abroad, wherever it may be.

I've known people move to Oz for the 'better weather' and return home pretty damn quickly having lost £10k on emigrating in the first place!!
