Hi, looking for a little advice
 

Hi, i am in the UK. Am looking for a bit of advice about moving to canada, I have been informed that i can go there for a period of 6 months. However i am getting conflicting advice as to how to go about doing this. can anyone clear this up about what is entailed.

Do i need to have a job offer first? or do i need a permit to be able to be there for 6 months?

you can enter as a tourist for up to six months ( assuming yuo have a brittish passport)

How old are you. what is your situation and where are you looking to move to in canada?

I am 36, live in the uk. my girlfriend is a canadian citizen living in windsor.


so basically i am looking into ways of getting over to canada to be with her permanently. at the moment i am just trying to find the best way to do that.

have you been living together as common law couple?

probably the easiest way is to get married :) I take it thats out of the question?

Thank you for the answers, but we live separately right now. With the research we've done already it seems the spousal sponsorship is our only option. He's in the UK and I am in Canada. Our goal is to spend a more lengthy time together and possibly get married sometime in the future.
How do you go about visiting Canada for 6 months? Do you just show up and say so? We are just starting to investigate all this and at this time it all seems very confusing.

Just to confirm - you are the OP's partner? Just that you're responding as if you are the OP, but from a different account which is v confusing!

Your partner would just arrive in Canada, and assuming he is eligible (i.e. is a UK citizen with no criminal record etc) will be given up to six months entry as a UK citizen - he doesn't need to do anything in advance. However, do note that it's up to six months, so he may be given less than six months entry. His entry is also not guaranteed, he could be refused but that's incredibly unlikely and I've never known it happen. Do also bear in mind that he won't be eligible for healthcare (so will need good insurance) or able to work on a visitor visa.

You may also want to investigate spousal sponsorship now so that you understand what you have to do to sponsor him at a later date. For this you need to be either married or have lived together for a year or more, and he would then become a Permanent Resident of Canada. Allow approx 6 months for the whole process if you do an outland application going on current timescales - details of Spousal Sponsorship is in the Wiki. You may also want to read up on how to visit Canada on the CIC website.

This is very much along the line what we were thinking, but it can feel very intimidating at first. Thank you so much for your help. I'm sure we'll need more as we move along.
