Re: Hi I'm New!
Hello, I am going to get on here before the Apprentice starts - ha ha - not that I live by whats on the telly or anything! I read here that someone/you? is missing Next, gosh I think we have been brainwashed by the place. I am going to buy in bulk before I come over - possibility of a seperate container might be explored, just kidding.
I hope you can afford a lovely place soon like the picture, it is a beautiful house - maybe we could pool our skills and build our own, my husband is an electrician and ex-matelot. He is planning to be self-employed in Canada when we hopefully get our visa this summer (July 04 submitted) I think we will have to find him a job though to get a mortgage to get a house when we get there. Can't wait to visit in June, the boys (5 and 1) are going to in-laws for a week while we research places, jobs, take Journeyman Exam and enjoy ourselves. Well thats the plan anyway. There is another chap on here that lives in Red Deer and kindly gave us some good stuff about Red Deer but thankyou for the offer and I am sure it won't be long before I am firing questions as you sound genuinely enthusiastic about the place too. regards, Jane

Stockport was about 5 miles from where we lived in Hyde and it was my place to go for my occasional retail therapy fix!
So you're coming out here in June? Excellent! You really should check out Red Deer as a place to think about. It is ideally situated between the two big cities and employment is just all over the place. Everywhere you go you see "Hiring" signs. It's population has increased somewhat from our first time round....there were 76,000 in 2003 and now I reckon there's over 80,000. House prices have, unfortunately for us, gone through the roof....mainly because of the crazy oil boom and Red Deer being a good base to live (there are lots of Oil Companies here). We have a fantastic "trail system" running through the city and it has so much to offer regarding retail and eating out. I can't comment that much on Lethbridge except that we stayed overnight there before we left Alberta to go live in Ontario! But I'm totally biased with my home town - I can't wait to show it all off to my family when they visit next year. Do you have job offers yet? What avenue are you applying through? And kids (you mentioned you were coming over kid free), how old are they? If you were interested in more info on R/D, I'll be happy to reply

We have only just submitted our application though (Jan 2006) and been told 39 months waiting time. So we are filling our time with research.

Regarding me being the one missing Next, nope, not me. I was an ASDA buff for clothes back home! Still, when you get here, you do learn to live without places like Next and Adams etc. Stores like Sears, Zellers, and even Walmart have some great kiddie clothes. Besides you can always rely on the rellies to bring over Next outfits on their visits to you. If you're going to come to Red Deer, just give us a shout and we can meet you and show you the best bits - even if it's just for the day (a week will fly by when you've got that much planned into it)....I'm here anyway

How long have you been in Edmonton?[/QUOTE]
We have just had our fist year anniversary
It is hard to leave the family, my parents are getting on 91 & 80, I have to say that they were right behind us moving here and they even came to visit in the summer, I was thrilled, they loved it here and really encouraged us to make a new life here. They are wonderful parent's! must stop this I'm getting all silly and emotional. I am going to visit them in June, they have since moved to Tenerife, so myself and the children are off there end of June.

Belated Happy Anniversary then! Great!
I know exactly how you feel regarding your parents....my hubby's parents are in their 80's too and his dad is quite frail and always in and out of hospital. My fella worries nearly everyday about the prospect that he could lose him every day and that we're not there, however his Dad is equally supportive of our lives here - all he ever wanted was for us to be happy. That's great that you are going to Tenerife to see your parents in June - what a holiday!

Re: Hi I'm New!
Hi there and Welcome,
We moved here from Ditton, near Maidstone in 1990, our first home was also in Beaumont which we had built. Our girls both went to the Elementary school there. We lived in Beaumont for 4 years, it is a nice small town and quite friendly. Beaumont has grown like crazy over the last 5 years and is still growing, lots of new homes and businesses. After 4 years we to moved to Leduc where we lived until last August when we moved to an acreage just 10 mins drive south of Beaumont. We do a lot of our grocery shopping in Beaumont which is our nearest place for shopping. One new business that has just recently opened in Beaumont is a Nepalese & East Indian Restaurant!!! Can't wait to try it out!
Homesickness was a huge problem for me when we first moved here but I can now say that I am over all that (took years) and we are thoroughly enjoying our life here now. There is one thing that I really miss and I think always will and that is the history that the UK has and also the lush green countryside.
Good luck with your move and good luck with your new house, hope all goes to plan for you

As for me, looking at my timeline you'd think it's happened quickly but myself and my lady have been thrashing through our options for the last three years. We've come up against our fair share of brick walls and had almost given up on the prospect of moving to Canada. Originally we didn't score enough points for a skilled worker application and I'd contacted police forces all over Canada just to be told that I'd need to be a permanent resident before I even applied. We decided to sell our home so that I could afford to attend uni for four years in order to apply as skilled workers (then have to wait another two or more years waiting for the application to go through!) Anyway one last phone call to the Edmonton Police turned out to be probably one of the most important I've ever made! They said they would accept an application and that if it was succesful they'd let me come over for testing. This meant a potential job offer and therefore more precious points! I was over the moon. The application form was massive and going over for three weeks, alone, for all the testing was definately not good for my blood pressure! It wasn't until I was over there that they mentioned the possibility of PNP. It seemed our luck had changed. It's only recently that it's all sincking in. Throughout the process I've been expecting something to go wrong. Anyway we are going to CHC to pick up our visas the day after tomorrow and our flights are booked for 3rd August. We've even organised the house, a new build in Beaumont, just south of Edmonton. I know that our journey is only just beginning and that there is no such thing as a perfect life, just a few perfect moments amoungst the not so perfect ones but I'm ready for a change and a challenge so bring it on eh?!
