hi, all!
hi, all and hope everyone is having a good day, wherever you are!
just a quickie from me.....does anyone on here have any good contacts regarding possible job openings within the aerospace/electronics/manufacturing industries in BC at all, please? i am actually in 2 minds at the moment (thats me all over, i hear you all saying...!)--whether to go for a job or open a small business there. i have done some research regarding things like Subway, pizza restaurants and even Dollar shops. the business choice will mean that i will have to work all gods hours in order to do well, something i have not been used to, having been an employee all my life! but, heck, if push comes to shove, i can do it if need be. i am loking to be in BC in the next 2 or 3 months possibly. with the job option, i can use my experience and qualifications to good use, for a reasonable salary. this option would suit me really to start with. i have only been to BC the once for a recce, but i liked what i saw. but industries may not be as diverse as in ontario, where i was employed before. there is also a possibility that i may land a job at my previous emplyer in ontario, but i'd rather live and work in BC!! any info would be much appreciated. :) |
Re: hi, all!
IF you've got the Money Tim Hortons is supposed to get a reutrn on investment in 18 months. Family I know in 4 years have 5 stores and completely revamped their lifestyle. Initial deposit was by raised by taking loans on the Brothers family homes.

I remember when you were returning to the UK. I think I'd just joined then.
Good luck with your travels back to Canada:) |

Re: hi, all!
"as i have said, we have tried to put as much gloss on it as possible, but it does not seem to be working out for us. its not the cold, its not the people, its just......canada!! there just is not any real culture here, everyone is geared to slaving away at work, and all you get after that are 2 damn weeks of vacation! just the same as in the usa.in my opinion again, they have got the work/social life equation just about right in europe (that includes the uk)--i am not saying that the brits are lazy buggers, but the way the system is geared to leisure time realisations, maximum weekly hour limits etc is a good thing. and yes, iaink, i agree that its too early to pack up, but i really do believe we will be better of in the uk!"
I hope that BC will be the right place for you and your family - it's absolutely gorgeous if nothing else! BUT - you were very anti-canada when you returned back home, as you can see from some of your comments from that time. Are you really sure that BC will be that much different from Ontario? Sorry, but it seems like a lot of time and stress for you all to be going back and forth without being certain that you're finally settling somewhere for the long haul...:) |
Re: hi, all!
Here is the Aerospace and Defence page of the Company Capabilities website that Industry Canada maintains. It's a good way to find out who the players in a given industry and given region are.

Re: hi, all!
yes, i know i was very very anti-canada at that time--i think i was anti-anything really, mainly due to the fact that there was an undercurrent of family politics going on, which i did not want to mention on the forum, but which you now all know about!
as it is now, i have realised that we made a very bad mistake indeed, and the chocolate-box olde englande we were expecting has fast disappeared, at least where we live in london. that is not to say all of england is the same, but its just a gut feeling i get that the country is somehow not what it used to be and is going down the pan very fast, if not already there. as rgds moving, the only way it can now be done is that i am having to go on my tod, leaving the family here, as the kids have come of age now and have got their own strong wishes and they are adamant they want to study here and nowhere else, and once that is over, then they will decide what to do. so if we waited for them, that would be another 5 to 6 yrs, and by then i will have lost the chance to settle down in canada. so, the wife and kids will stay here, and i will go over, get a job/business/whatever and get settled in, taking yearly trips back here to see how everyone is getting on etc. thats the only choice i have got left now, after making the biggest mistake of my life, but there you go--you have to look forward and move on, rather than keep looking back and crying over spilt Tim Hortons cappucino! i have made my mind up now that this time its going to be for good, with no looking back, come rain or shine--thats how it has to be. regarding bc, yes, we loved it to pieces and thats why i decided on moving there this time. i know real estate prices are thru the roof and more, but i have done my homework and reckon we can get something reasonable to start with, and then move up the ladder slowly if reqd. as many of you may know, i qualified in aerospace engineering many moons ago and spent almost 20 years in the field, so i am sure somebody will want me in BC!! if not, i have recently changed tack and qualified as a financial advisor too here, and although i will need to get requalified in canada, i know the ropes now well enough to succeed in this field too, so there is this possibility too. i am looking to leaving here in the next 2 or 3 months but am trying to see if i can set something up before i leave--that would be great. by the way, whatever happened to iaink on here? has he changed his alias or something as i dont see any of his posts recently? I hope that BC will be the right place for you and your family - it's absolutely gorgeous if nothing else! The painful lessons that you went through with your family are beginning to pay dividends. You seem to be stronger, confident and in charge of your own life.Go for it,you already got the goods in you which no one can take away from you. Re: hi, all!
hi again, guys!
thanks so much to you all for the help--i am looking around at openings in vancouver right now, and also trying to sus out some business that i may go for if a job is not forthcoming. as yoong has said, it needed us to come back to the uk again to regain that first initial enthusiasm we had back in 2004 when we left here for ontario. as you all know, the treatment we have had dished out to us here has been unbelieveable, but we have persevered and that has made us even more steadfast now in getting out of this mess as fast as life will allow. i know in my heart of hearts that we will succeed there and once there, life will be that much more better for us, as we will be out of this vicious circle of parental control that has kept us chained to them for so long. the only thing is that i feel so sorry for my wife, who will have to stay on with the kids for a few more years while i am away, but there is no other way we can do this, and she is resigned to this fact. this is the final move for us now and there is no turning back. we are going to shut our minds off completely to the uk and look towards what our life will be like when we are free from this burden in canada! yippee :) |
