help with scaffolding
 

hi im a level 2 scaffolder in manchester looking to work in Canada. Can anyone help me regarding the demand for my trade, and does anyone know how I get the ball rolling....any help would be really appreciated as this forum is my first port of call and I dont know how to start...thanx

I have never seen any form of scaffolding used in Calgary. I am sure it does exist, just that I have never seen it.

You could start with reading this. Your first challenge is going to be finding a job and getting a work permit. Cannot say I have seen a whole lot of scaffolding in Canada at all.

I saw some here in Halifax - it was all made from wood - I kid you not! And very wonky it looked as well!

Here in NS Scaffolders are part of the Carpenters Union - Local 83 is the Halifax one. May be worth giving them a call for more assistance?

I have seen/hired/used scaffold here in NL. You can buy it in Home Depot for example.

They aren't a firm - they are the union - if you join the union you work for union companies and get benefits like healthcare etc.

Bamboo is in Asia - In Canada it is 2 x 4s, usually put up the the GC.

If you do a Google search for scaffolding in Canada you'll end up with enough to keep you busy for a week.

If an industry is union, the chances of a foreigner getting work are slim to none.

Victoria certainly seem to use a lot of scaffolding, a whole load of it fell down last winter and crushed some cars...

I've not seen much scaffolding on building sites.

The most likely place for a scaffolder to find work will be with event organizers: companies that assemble and disassemble temporary stages and spectator seating.

I've seen it used down town. The proper metal stuff, like you get in the UK. Several building sites had scaffolding on my walk to work - there's a new condo development on hastings (I think, but it might be pender) that has scaffolding outside to about 3 or 4 storeys.

I don't doubt you, so I'm wondering how I can't remember seeing any. Maybe it is screened so it does not look like scaffolding from a distance. No doubt I'll see scaffolding everywhere now.

Yes, I think they cover it with 'you could soon be living here' type adverts or something. I'm down town tomorrow and I will pay more attention as I walk past as I'm beginning to doubt my memory of it - it will probably turn out to not be scaffolding at all.
