Help please..trying to send resume via email!

Hi all

I'm sure one of you lovely people will be able to help me! i've finally sent off OH resumes to various companies today ensuring it is on different size paper etc.

Well we have just had our first reply! However they cannot open the attachment and have asked me to change the software application to word or equivalent.

Am I right in thinking that I should save it as a .doc file?

I don't want to look like a right idiot by sending it again and they can't open it.......again. Not a good start as you can appreciate :(

What format did you send it in? I sent all my unsolicited resumes in pdf format with no problems.

However if companies specify a particular format such as word then you should comply with that - and yes, word documents are usually .doc ...

Yeah!!

Need to save it as the old version, obviously they haven't updated their software. Try word 1993.

Good luck!!

As Jingle has said above, sending as a .pdf is definitely advisable. That way EVERYONE can read it, and the formatting is preserved regardless of what system they're reading it on.

The free Open Office (not sure about MS Office 2007?) allows you to save directly to .pdf, or there are various bits of free software that allow you to 'print' to .pdf from older versions of office.

If they specifically want Word, the safest bet is to save it as a Word 2003 .doc file rather than a .docx from the more recent one.

Cheers, Iain

Are they AOL users? Are you Mac? I always have problems sending anything from a Mac to one of them. Well, obviously it's their problem, but you know what I mean ;)

You could always upload an html resume somewhere and get them to view it online if all else fail?

I have a Mac too, I always send things .pdf as I wouldn't trust the Mac Office to PC Office conversion!

A large proportion of Canadians seem to be Mac users, something else to keep in mind!

There might be quite a few, but large proportion is quite a stretch. PC still dominates the consumer & business market.

Ok, "compared to other parts of the world (i.e. Britain), a large proportion of Canadians....."

Certainly for home use, I know very few people with a PC on the desktop here (although I do know a lot of students!)

Thanks everyone for all your help. I have now sent everything as a .doc file so hopefully they can read it now;)

Just hope they can see past the slip up and realise they can have an excellent carpenter working for them and not a pathetic imitation of Bill Gates:rofl:
