HELP!!! (please!)

Hello all

have been here in canada (quebec) since end of july AND I LOVE IT!

have started new job and bought new car and house.

BUT . . . . didn't take the temporary health cover (I know, I know - 'twas a bad idea - i realise that now) and now I could do with seeing a doctor.

Does anyone know of the cost it's likely to be for a consultation or if there is any options open to me?

My health insurance eligibilty starts in novemebr so I may just wait but I could do with going perhaps sooner to put my mind at rest.

Advice gratefully recieved.

Many thanks

Michael

Hi there, don't know if I can help much, but I can let you know what happened to me in Nova Scotia. I needed to see a doctor (nothing urgent) so I went to the local hospital. I was told that it would cost approx $100, plus the doctor's fees. But......if I wanted to wait a couple of days, the same doctor would see me at the local practice, with no charge. I have Nova Scotia health cards for all the family, so this wasn't a problem. However, I wasn't able to go back to see her again, as the receptionist wouldn't let me register with that practice as they weren't taking on new patients. If it's not urgent, wait until your health care kicks in, but you could always ask at the local A & E as well. I don't know if this is the same policy in Quebec tho. Good luck with it !

Should have said it was CD$150 to use the clinic and CD$150 to see the doctor.

Hi,

Although we are lucky and managed to get Medicare coverage on a work permit, my doctor charges $30 for a standard consultation. Depends where you are though.

Good luck

You might ring a few local doctor's offices, tell them when you are eligible, they may take pity on you for the sake of a few weeks and let you make an appointment. Or try social services/ new immigrants services in your area, they might have someone who deals sympathetically with people in your situation. Good luck.

Also....you might want to try these walk-in clinics we keep seeing, some of them are even opened on saturdays and late evenings.

Re: HELP!!! (please!)

Before our Ontario cover kicked in we were charged $50 at the local walk-in clinic. We did have 3 months private cover though so we just claimed it back.

If you are really worried you shouldn't wait until November, your health is more important than material possessions (I work in an Intensive Care Unit and see proof of this every day). If you do have a problem you can get the necessary treatment, and if it is nothing at least it will put your mind at rest and prevent you being stressed out for the next month. If you need to be referred to a specialist your health cover will probably have kicked in by the time you get an appointment - so start the ball rolling now!!

Don't know how much it is in Quebec, but a walk in consultation is $52.50 here...

Good luck

I don't want this to sound rude (it isn't meant to be), but .......

irregardless of your profession and skills .....

Is this a Quebec thing, but isn't it serious malpractice and illegal to prescribe drugs for friends/colleagues/acquaintances???

Re: HELP!!! (please!)

I had to go into ER in our local hospital before we had our Health cards here in Ontario. I had flipped one of my big toe nails up as suitcase stumped into it and it was sticking directly upright so HAD to come off. Hobbled off to the hospital, was seen almost straight away, given loads and loads of injections and finally got toe numb enough to pull nail off. Cost - $158. So not a big deal. Good luck with whatever is wrong and hope you are well again soon.

Thanks to all for your advice.
