Default Health Insurance in Vancouver

Hi Guys,

I will soon be arriving in Vancouver to start my new job, however I have been told that I need to find my own health insurance for the first 3 months until my employers insurance kicks in.

Can you suggest which one to use for my partner and I?

Is it true that I can take out UK travel insurance to cover us?

Which is the best phone tariff to use? Here in the UK we are on 3 and its amazing cheap cheap cheap

Thanks

No, you need specialist new arrivals cover. See here http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Medical_Insurance-Canada the section "Before Medicare Starts" has a list of several companies providing this type of cover.

Also note that there are two types of cover, MSP which the NHS style public health system. The wait time is the balance of your month of arrival plus two months. There is a monthly premium of $60.50 (?) which some employers will pay. If they don't you have to pay this.

Employers often also offer extended health coverage that pays for a part of other health expenses such as dentistry, prescription drugs, physiotherapy etc. There is typically a three month waiting period for these as well. It is generally not worth taking private cover for these.
