Default Health insurance for a long term American visitor.

My girlfriend is an American and as she won't have a visa she is going to visit me for 6 months until her visa hopefully comes through. Does anybody know what we would do about getting her health insurance as she presently gets it through her employer.

Thanks in advance.

She would have to purchase private health insurance. Many companies offer this to travelers. In Canada most of the banks will sell short-term health insurance, even to foreign visitors. RBC, for example: Visitors to Canada Travel Insurance Plans - RBC Insurance

She should shop around and get a few quotes.

Btw, you should verify if US citizens are permitted to stay in Canada for 6 months straight without a visa.

No visa is required but stays of 6 months or over require authorization from CIC i.e. a visitor record on entering Canada.
