Heading to Edmonton for a scouting trip

Hi all

Having just had a telephone job offer with a LMO already and waiting I am heading out to Edmonton on Dec 29th to meet face to face with my prospective new employer and to undertake a quick fact finding mission. I have been told my OH will get an open work visa so he will be coming out with me to network so he can hopefully get some insight as to how easy it will be for him to get a job offer, he is classed as semi skilled and works with in the manufacturing industry as a Chemical processing operator.

Any tips or advice will be very gratefully received, this has happened so quickly I would really appreciate some pointers from the expat community.

This is so exciting but at the same time extremely daunting. Please help what should our priorities be????

A warm winter coat, a good pair of gloves and boots. Maybe even a toque.

Warm coat, hat gloves and snow boots already sorted. I know it will be very cold!!! It will be a good experience to sample a bit of winter Canada Style. At least the country doesnt grind to a hault because of a bit on snow unlike the UK!!!

The UK's not set up for it, because there's no point in spending a huge amount of money on it for the small amount of snow we get in the UK - unlike Canada, where it's kind of essential!

I think it's a v good idea you're going over in winter, how long are you going for?

If you can tell people whereabouts in Edmonton you'll be working and the type of house/community you're looking for, they might be able to suggest a few areas for you to look at whilst you're there (although be prepared for the smart alecs to say 'look anywhere but Edmonton!).

Best of luck with it.

Hi

Its a short 10 day trip. I have a choice of two locations for employment one is NW Edmonton the other is Red Deer So we will be looking at both places. The deciding factor will be job opportunities for my OH.

Thanks for all your help with this

In which case, I'd suggest maybe a thread about Red Deer v Edmonton? We've got a few posters that have lived in both I believe, so hopefully they'll give you their thoughts.

Good luck choosing and with the trip.

What is the difference between a short 10 day trip and a long 10 day trip?
