Default Has anyone been sponsered/gained PR without a degree?

Hi there,

Just wondered are there ways/has anyone gained PR by working your way up from the bottom and gaining sponsership from being a good worker with no degree or particular skills?

I'm 28 and I never finished my degree, for the past 8 years i've been working in a small family business (on-line retail) and done a multitude of jobs within the business. So have no real qulifications but experience in a few different areas (jack of all trades, master on none... comes to mind).

I've got my IEC and will be coming over in June - mainly to have fun and live a bit and see a new part of the world.

IF I like Canada and decide I want to stay - do I have a chance of PR with no degree?

There are many people working in offices/retail/banks etc in Canada without possessing a degree.

You could sell stuff on EBay in Canada without a degree.

Shows you what a backward nation Canada is. Almost everyone in the UK has a degree; even the guy handing you your Big Mac.

I obtained a Temp Work Permit, then Permanent Residence and Citizenship without a degree.

Not exactly a strong recommendation for 3/4 years of "study" to a BA (bugger all).

Well, you obviously plucked that "fact" out of thin air.

If you bothered to do any research, you'd find that about a third of young people receive university degrees in each country. That's far from being "almost everyone".

Even looking at the wider population, Canada and the UK actually have similar university completion rates of just under 30% (which is the percentage of the population aged 25-64 with a university degree). Norway is the international leader with 35%. Again, far from being "almost everyone".

Me too. When it comes to education, I got nothing.

I've sponsored people to Canada, as an employer, and am pretty sure that at least one has no degree; it's not something we ask as formal education isn't immediately relevant to our work.

Now I have been in my industry about 14 years, I can honestly say only about 5% of my degree (if that) has been any use.

I can see some people getting 'life experience' from being away from mummy and daddy, but I've basically looked after myself since my very early teens so that doesn't count in my case.

Sad thing is I would have struggled to get my foot on the ladder in my chosen occupation without my degree...... and the many, many, many thousands of pounds of debt I racked up in the process....... but a lot of that went on beer...... and I started university owning only one CD and left with 250.... perhaps I could have been a bit more frugal, but I had a good time
