Halifax NS - Good and Bad
There has been a great deal posted in relation to Nova Scotia recently, and it would appear that you either love it or hate it. We're looking at a move to Halifax, and for those of you that already live there can you let us know what you feel the best 2 or 3 things are about it, and also the worst 2 or 3 things are.

Re: Halifax NS - Good and Bad
Good:
not much traffic congestion and fairly easy commute into Halifax from surrounding areas. You can live less than 30 minute commute from Halifax and really feel like you are in the wilderness good choice of restaurants and bars and good standard of food generally property prices (although people here still moan about property being expensive the reality is that on a global scale its extremely reasonable city is growing and economy is doing fairly well here at the moment downtown Halifax is a manageable size and pretty much everything is walking distance Bad: business community is a bit cliquey in my opinion. Lots of networking events but they tend to attract the same crowd - a bunch of CEOs who have all known each other since school standing around having the same conversation each time. It can seem a bit hard to break into at times. people (at least in the business community) still actually refer to outsiders as CFAs (come from away)! wages a fair bit lower than other Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes are high comparred to other provinces and really eat up the bulk of your income |

Thanks Paul
Interestingly, and a good thing - the good points seem to outweigh the bad points. I once asked someone what they felt was the downside of living in Canada and was told that there is 'no pub culture'. That was supposed to be a bad thing............ Congrats on your one thousandth post ! |

Re: Halifax NS - Good and Bad
It has the second longest waterfront boardwalk in the world after Sidney and is buzzing all summer with different events, outside eating and performing artists. The Tall Ships Race last summer was superb.
Bad = fog sometimes, cold wind |
Re: Halifax NS - Good and Bad
Hi there, good things 1. Your children will grow up more slowly (if you have any) we have one here and three left behind in UK so speak from experience (dont miss the bing drinking society!)
2. Maritimers are really genuine , friendly bunch of people...I used to live in Ontario, no comparision to Nova Scotia. 3. You are never more than 30 mins away from water, superb views Bad things: WE have a reputation of being a "have not province" We don't have any "Take out" curry places ... Road signs are never in the right places when you need to find one on the highway" Love it here have no regrets! June |
