Guinea Pigs
 

Hi Guys

I'm looking for any help or advice in relation to bringing the kids 2 Guinea pigs with us.
We have our flights booked with Air Transat for 1st Sept this year but as far as I can see they do not permit small animals.

I have been told that small animals like guinea pigs may not survive the journey so this will also come into our thoughts when making our decision about bringing them.

If anyone who has done this has any advice on best solution along with approx costs my kids would really appreciate it.

I think its hard when it comes to small animals like guinea pigs. We did bring a dog and a cat with us but I felt it was just too much to bring the guinea pigs too.

We had two guinea pigs but decided not to bring them with us. The kids were a bit disappointed but we explained the reasons and they accepted it. Partly the expense and also bearing in mind their life expectancy anyway without the stress of the flight etc. I'm glad we didn't arrange anything for them as one died about a month before we flew anyway. We found a really good home with a friend for the other one but that too died just a few months after we left.

To make it easier on the kids we promised that we would get them a hamster after the move which is what we did.

TBH we never ever contemplated bringing them with us so its not something we looked into.

having some banter with a French-Canadian at work the other day, and some of the French i'd learned at school he'd never heard

calling a guinea pig "un cabaye" wasn't something he knew...they only called them "cochon d'inde"

It's been a long time since I heard them called "cobaye"!!!!! I think actually though that only certain areas of France know them as that and even only certain people...

a quick google search suggests that "un cabaye" means a person used for medical tests in the "guinea pig" sense, and that "un cochon d'inde" refers to the animal!

oh? interesting... in eastern France it was an animal...as well as a human guinea pig! It just depended on the sentence it was in!

We were considering bringing the gerbil - but BA wanted 270gbp in 2008! Plus a special double skinned cage!

We just told the kids that due to age, the vet wouldn't issue a fit to fly certificate!

A parent who really loved their kids would have bitten the bullet and smuggled it in to the country Richard Gere style. :thumbdown:

I dud consider wrapping it in cling film and sticking up one of the dogs arses but luckily my son decided to give her (the gerbil) to his class at school !
