Guardianship Query
 

Hi

Its me again. We are making our way over to validate our PR'S on the 26th Oct;). We have a 15yr old son, who has, bless him, made the decision to stay for education purposes and we will come back, sell up and move over permanently.
He will be staying with my niece and her husband. Now, do I need to get Guardianship papers for him, or as he will have PR would it be ok just to nominate her and her husband as Guardians for educational and medical purposes.
He really doesnt want to come back to NZ with us and I think it would be best to leave him there too. At least he will get a good start on his education. Also has anyone got any teenage kids that have moved to Toronto that could give me a few tips on how to settle my son in and how your kids settled in and do they like it.

Also can someone tell me what TWP stands for, sorry Guys but this short stuff malarky is confusing....Cheers in advance :D

I have no idea about your other question (my children are only 1 and 3 so haven't got to that stage yet!) but thought this might help with the abbreviations..........

I found your post very confusing. If I understand you correctly, it goes like this. Mr. and Mrs. keznjj and Master keznjj will travel to Canada in October to "land" and activate their PR status. Master keznjj wants to stay behind with Mrs. keznjj's niece and her husband in Canada, while Mr. and Mrs. keznjj return to New Zealand, sell up, arrange for removalists, and later return to Canada.

Our son spent a year in Australia with the family of a classmate. This was so that he could complete high school there after the rest of us had returned to Canada. We gave his host parents a letter authorizing them to use their discretion in the event of a medical emergency. That turned out to be useful, because my son broke his wrist during a skateboarding accident, and his host mother authorized surgery. She tried to reach us on the phone but couldn't because of time differences, etc., so she just went ahead and told the orthopedic surgeon to do his thing. During that year, my son was attending a private school. We were paying his tuition, and we also purchased private medical insurance for him (which covered the cost of his surgery).

The story of my son has brought up two complicating factors that I can think of in your son's case.

Your son would be eligible for free schooling at public (government-funded) schools only if you had bought a residence or were renting accommodation in the relevant school's catchment area.

In addition to that, I don't know about your son's eligibility for provincial health care insurance if you are not living in the relevant province.

From what I can tell, Toronto is a fine place for teenagers. My husband's niece and nephew (now in their twenties) liked it very well when they were teenagers.

A good way for your son to find out what's what would be to participate in The Youth Club here on BE. Only youth are allowed to post there, not adults.
