Greetings from Nova Scotia
Hi everyone
Hubbards is hot! (actually freezing cold for Brit sensibilities) Flew in on Monday and at the moment it still feels like we are on holiday. We are here for two months to do some intensive (we hope) research into living in NS out of season and also to network for job purposes. We have no phone in our rented property which is making things a little difficult, particularly as response to emails is snail pace or not at all. We are going to purchase a cheap pay as you go so that should make things a little easier. We didn't realise we couldn't just purchase a Sim card here and put it into our cell phone. Trying to avoid the temptation to go and view some of those luverly properties for sale as it might lead to overexcitation before we have anything sorted on the job front! It is interesting to see some of the surrounding properties close to houses we saw from the ouside last year. With no leaves on the trees you can see all the crap (excuse me, NS collectibles) rusting away in front gardens. On a drive around the Aspotogan Peninsula this morning we saw what looked like an eagle (very big, black and white and bald) perched on what we thought was a rock in a frozen inlet of the ocean. On closer viewing the rock turned out to be a dead seal trapped in the ice. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get that in the East Midlands. Must away to do some research If I can tear myself away from the ocean view tempting me from every window:D |

How cold? We were in Alberta at christmas time and it wa down to -24 but it felt a different cold to the UK. Plus we were wrapped up and on the move. |

Thanks got it on the map now! We are 'thinking of west of Halifax on the coast so anything you think about the place post it! eg schools, housing, crime, what it looks like, cost of food v UK all vital stuff.:D

Good luck with your 2-month stay. Re cell phones - you'll be lucky to get a cheap phone because its the pay-as you-go tend to be contract for 12 months too (or maybe thats just up in New Glasgow (Rogers)). Shame there is no phone at your rented accommodation as you could have purchased a phone card and kept your expenses down. If you are moving around check for accommodation with free wireless internet access. There are lots of them around.
The weather is pretty cold and a bit up and down just now. Last week we had +6C one day and -19C the next. We have had a little snow but not much and the roads are clear. Most days it has been bright blue skies and sunshine although I am led to believe that springtime is not so great and is probably more cloudy and rainy. Coming here so early in the year will show you the province at its worst. So if this is the worst it can look, I still give it the big thumbs up :thumbsup: Summers will be long and warm, followed by a beautiful fall. If you are headed up our way pm me. :) |

Upshot of what I was saying was if we like NS out of season with grotty weather we will love it in the summer months. It would be a big mistake to come out here on the strength of a holiday experience. We are realistic people and don't expect we will be coming to paradise. Have already heard of some of the dark underbelly of rural life in NS so we are realistic in our expectations. Is there much work in New Glasgow? Will certainly pm you if we head that way during our visit> |
