I think when it's that close up that you can see in peoples windows, then there is a real privacy issue.
Ive used it! Had to use Flikr to find a house number of a house I lived in for PR application - Searched for the road name and found photos of the street, was taken with a DSLR as was able to locate house and number!

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of it.
I'm with you on this. It's not likely that our street will be googled but still I'd rather the possibility wasn't there. I can't see the point of it except in that google will be able to sell upgrades, if your street looks bad I expect you will be able to pay them to revisit. Neat for estate agents, no good for anyone else.

Besides, I've seen images of people peeing on google earth that were later removed, I don't think I should be obliged to scan all their images and file individual complaints to have all the images of me peeing or having sex or whatever in the street that might hurt my career; they shouldn't take random pictures in the first place. If someone wants to see Detroit or Johannesburg then they should go there, not enjoy ghetto-porn on the interwebby.

That doesn't matter, it's not a consistent service. The leverage in google images is that it purports to represent streets as they are and so representing one street as being better than the next is a valuable service to people selling property in the first street, it's the comprehensiveness that makes it invasive and anti-competitive.

im not sure if any of you have actually used google maps from the UK/US or even Australia but the quality isn't exactly revolutionary ... I really wouldn't be too scared of people bring able to see through your windows lol

Peoples faces are blurred as are car registration details... I use it as a tool to locate an area... I mainly use it for hotel accommodation so i can identify what the area is like.

I have used them, and thats what alarmed me. I was busy looking at places I used to live and work. I recognised some people too.

I don't see why almosy every residential street needs to be photographed. Town centres, tourist areas maybe, but not The Railway Cutting, Cheam.

In the UK anyway people's faces and car registrations are blurred out. You can request to have your house or other property removed.

perhaps recently, but not always. Even Liam Gallagher got ticked off as they took a pic of a pub and Gallagher was seen (clearly) sitting having a pint.

Not always blurred. Have a look at St Johns Wood in London. Circus Road and Wellington Road junction.
