Cadbury's Giant Buttons and pickled onions ( now that Bulk Barn no longer keeps them) are high margin products.

Fortunately not. I didn't buy them at the market this morning because there was a queue in the shop. I went instead to a Bulk Barn where the owner couldn't grasp the concept of the pickled onion. I then went to a Bulk Barn that used to have them where the woman told me, sniffily, that they don't carry them anymore. I then walked into an independent grocers.

"May I help you?"

:"I'd like to buy a jar of pickled onions"

"What kind?"

"Haywards if you have them"

"Well, yes, but the regular ones, the strong ones?"

In the end I bought Thornton's. Hayward's are marginally better, I think.

I'm grateful for the links and the information provided by CanadaJimmy. Now I wonder what the (extra) shipping costs for a bed would be!

Ah yes, sorry, I misled you. I meant the cost of shipping a bed from the UK (in addition to all my other stuff which might fit in a 20' container but I have my doubts). So we have cost of buying in the UK + shipping v cost of buying in BC with free shipping from the store.

By comparison, my annual 'energy' bill is about £1000 per year split £550 for gas which provides room and water heating and £450 for electricity. That's for a 3 bed bungalow near the south coast.

Have a good think about what you really need to bring and what you probably won't even unpack. I'd suggest getting some ideas on shipping costs (they are eye wateringly expensive) and bringing your packing list down to your absolute essentials - heirlooms / irreplaceable items and things that you particularly love!

A 20' 'exclusive use' shipping container from the UK to Canada (incl packing) would run at £GBP5000 to maybe £6000. Add to that the cost of insurance (do NOT buy this direct from the people doing the packing or shipping for you, try Letton Percival). If you 'share' a container, the costs reduce.

I ordered curry to take away. Since I had time to kill I went into WalMart (an eye opening experience, who knew there were so many people in Orangeville who don't fit their clothes?) and looked at the Marmite. It's $4.79.
