Good time to buy a GM?
Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but they have a serious cash flow problem and have just been warned they are on the brink.
With that said, is worth a punt to get a great deal on a new car while forcing them to pay top dollar on my trade in?

Wishful thinking, indeed. There are a number of unanswered questions should GM go under. Servicing, warranties, financing come to mind. As far as FORCING them to give over the top on your trade-in, dream on.

Highly unlikely GM will be allowed to go under, far too many other industries in the U.S. would be affected.
The knock on effect would be tremendous.

They're giving massive discounts at the moment, I know someone who's just bought one...

the dump list I believe currently includes Pontiac and SAAB and maybe one other, but after todays news I think that may grow

Re: Good time to buy a GM?
There is never a good time to buy a GM vehicle in my opinion.
I got a GMC Acadia on a two year lease when I first arrived with my family. Within 3 months we had a replacement vehicle as the first developed a severe transmission fault. The replacement vehicle has been even more problematic with water leaks, brake issues, replacement steering column etc etc. All in all I've had more problems with the two Acadias in 18 months than I had with all my previous vehicles put together (new or used) during my 18 years as a driver.
Add to that the very precarious position that GM are in financially, the fact that some dealerships are closing (e.g. the local Saturn dealership near me has ditched GM and will shortly start selling Hyundai) and that residual values of GM vehicles are going through the floor; I can't see why anyone would consider a GM vehicle at the moment. They might be offering big discounts, but so are other manufacturers (who are in a much more stable position than GM) at this present time. Sure you might save a few thousand bucks now, but just wait until you come to sell it/trade it in a few years time!
I will never waste my money on a GM again, and I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy to be honest.
Hope that helps

I think Toyota is better than GM. GM will depreciate, buying new is never good with American cars, as you can get used cars for under $500.00

Nationalisation of the US Auto industry may be an inevitability. I wonder who they will find to play the part of 'Red Robbo'?
GM Quality (according to surveys) has improved vastly of late. I would consider certain vehicles but I would want a helluva deal.

That is a distinct possibility, they already dumped Oldsmobile a few years ago.

There will be good deals to be had though.
