Good Indian in Calgary?
It's funny what you end up missing. As sad as it sounds, it seems the only thing we're in the slightest bit homesick for so far is a good curry. Anyone in Calgary recommend a restaurant/take-out that bares any resemblance to a good english-style indian - if that makes sense. We've only tried the Glory of India downtown so far, some of which was fantastic (samosas, nans and pickles etc), but some a bit wierd and not quite what we were looking for. The Rogan Josh was a liquidised gravy with meat, and was a bit like a runny stew. If anyone has any recommendations we'd love to hear them!....If not I'm going to be forced to learn how to cook one myself from scratch....or have my old local fly me out a vat of chicken tikka jalfrezi - although air canada would probably lose it and it would arrive a week later without explanation like our luggage!

Have had to learn to cook it myself - I'm not in Alberta, but nearest Indian restaurant of any description is 5 hours drive away in Winnipeg!! Mind you, there's something nice about being able to go out and catch a few walleye, fillet them and make a balti. Served up with homemade garlic naan and tarka dhal - yum!!

Try the Mango Shiva? Maybe not quite your "traditional English curry house" though.....

The Taj Mahal on Macleod Trail a few blocks north of Chinook Mall is the nearest ive found to a "proper" UK curry house. Its not exactly fine dining though, looks a bit tacky and rough round the edges. But great food ( lot of choice ) and friendly people, and it has an English pub above it - The Broken Jug. Ive been in Calgary for 2 years now and only discovered it last month. Like i say...its not perfect but its the nearest i think Calgary has to what we Brits used to.

Re: Good Indian in Calgary?
Thanks for the recommendations everyone. That'll give us something to do to warm up some cold winter weekends - touring Calgary's best indian restaurants...and maybe we can put EVEN MORE weight on! We've gone up about 8 pounds each in 5 weeks here...although we're getting into supermarket shopping now instead of eating out all the time so should level out a bit. Supermarket is taking some getting used to mind. Honestly nearly fell over at the checkout the first time...hands down more expensve than home. Still can't belive in a country overflowing with wheat that a loaf of bread can cost $4.00!!!! Crazy.

Re: Good Indian in Calgary?
have a look on Google UK at www.bbc.co.uk for some great curry recipes.
mind you, they have to be washed down with a 'Tiger' beer:D |
Re: Good Indian in Calgary?
I have at least 3 Indian recipe books that I make all my own from, however here is a great website....www.madgeandgeoffrey.co.uk
Some of the curries look a bit complicated at the outstart but once you get all your ingredients in and have an "on demand" supply of frozen ginger pulp and cilantro (coriander leaf), you're laughing! My favourite curry back home was without a doubt Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi and there are no curry houses here in Red Deer (one is supposed to be opening up soon but they've been saying that for months! ) Try making your own, once tasted, you'll never look back ;) |
