We went across at easter, we showed our British passport and had to buy a visa waiver thingy - I think it was $6 each.

We landed when we came back so didn't have a PR card at the time, but was told next time we crossed the border we would have to show it on the way back through.

The US dont care about your PR status or otherwise at the point of entry. Traveling on a british passport you will probably need to go get the green I94W card for $6US, unless they take it easy on you.

Once you are sidelined to the office to get the I94W, having the PR card at that point might be usefull for proving you have ties to Canada. The US can be picky about letting people in without either proof of return travel, or ties to Canada.

Where you really need the PR card is to prove your PR status in Canada on your return to Canada. Technically its not yet a requirement when driving, if you have the long form to prove PR status thats OK too, but it will be easier to get back into Canada after the trip if you do have it.

Hello friends, i went USA @ Aldergrove crossing, showed my brit passport +had my pic taken + 2x finger checks.Took @ 10 mins in total. I was not asked for my PR card. On the way back from USA ,the Canadian border guys did,nt ask to see my passport or pr card .All they asked was have u bought anything.i told them i bought some groceries + sports gear .They just waved me thru.

Anyone going over , i recommend the outlet stores @ 200 + walmart. The prices are alot cheaper then Canada.

Did they take the green waiver slip out of your passport on the way back? If not you have net yet "officially" left the USA and may have trouble getting across again:

Just read your link @ the green card/slip . If i go to the border crossing [i only live 15 minutes away] + explain what happened +i was unaware @ handing in the green card/slip will they accept that. Who do i go + explain to : the canadians or usa border people?

We've crossed over from the US to Niagra Falls last year for a few days and the green slips were left in as we explained we were only in Canada for a few days before returning to the states. On this premise I would "suppose" that when you go over to the US next week there shouldn't be a problem, just say you were in Canada for a few days. I would make sure they take the slip out on the way back to Canada.

Re: GOING TO USA -WHAT ID DO I NEED

I've been to the US loads of times from Canada with a British passport and also passing through the US on the way to and from Canada and the UK and they almost never take out that green thing when you leave because they don't really have any exit checks at the US aiports. They check the photo ID page of the passport a lot at security to check against your boarding card etc. but they are just security, you don't go through INS on the way out so nobody ever removes it. I've re-entered the US with them in and nobody has ever said anything, or removed them.

It was confusing flygin to the US a few days ago as it was my first trip since I got Canadian Citizenship but I don't currently have a Canadian Passport, just the card. So the first thing at INS in Pearson is one line for Canadian Citizens and one for other passport holders. So I wanted to go in the Canadian line but they guy said I should go in the other one because the passport was British. The INS guy wasn't sure either because you need a passport now to enter so I was entering on a UK passport but I had the Citizenship Card so I didn't need a Visa Waiver. He just told me to get a Canaidan Passport next time.

Your visa waiver form (green slip) is valid for 90 days - which will mean you won't have to buy another one when you go again next week - just make sure you hand it in when you know it will be your last trip within those 90 days.
