Gluten free in BC

Re: Gluten free in BC
Look out for Delish Gluten free (http://www.delishglutenfree.com/) at farmers markets and a few stores in the Vancouver area. I don't know how far out into the valley they supply but it is hands down the best GF bread I've had (waaay better even than Udi's).

The other issue we have come across is "gluten free" goods being made in a facility that's not gluten free. We had this argument with a local bakery who were advertising how wonderful their new GF range was but when we enquired it turned out they make them in the same kitchen as all the regular cakes and keep them in the cabinets together, sometimes sharing same plate! The owner then said "oh if you are sensitive to gluten then you cannot eat these"
She now has very very small labels on each product tray saying that product is made in a kitchen that processes wheat products.

My OH has had similar things happen. Often eating something that doesn't appear to contain anything bad but then suffering bloated stomach, pains and sickness. Its amazing just how many items can contain gluten in one form or another.

Re: Gluten free in BC
Any food labelled gluten free should contain less than 20ppm gluten which is why avoiding cross contamination is risky. I follow a coeliac diet and am very careful what I eat. Only yesterday a friend raised eyebrow when I would use butter or sauce with a communal knife. Butter-cracker-butter- gf cracker, gf. Cracker no longer gf. I want to throttle the idiots who think going gf will make you thin. If only!

My wifes been diagnosed with Celiacs since we have lived here, I thought it would be a total nightmare but tbh its not been to bad, most places we eat out at have a good selection of GF options, and we can get many GF products in almost every supermarket, most bakeries sell some kind of terrible GF bread
