Sorry but everytime I see this thread I keep asking myself " why does a car need a visa?"

won't be easy to save up and buy a car.
If I were living and working in Mtl on an IEC visa, I'd not bother buying a car (clunker or otherwise) in the first year. Weekend rentals to get out of town, and/or the multiple car-sharing options available are very affordable.

As someone mentioned above, insurance could be a killer ....

Yeh I think rentals are the way to go for now. I have my licence exchange in a few weeks. (Had to wait over 3 weeks for an appointment) so hopefully have some freedom soon

Thanks for the comments

Currently on an IEC work permit (runs out in August) just bought a $38,000 Jeep Wrangler on a 7 year finance plan so yes it can be done and no I did not need a co signer.

Insurance is also reasonably cheap for Canada standards... $2,100.

Obviously more to this than just simply walking in and signing a 7 year lease when the maximum on the IEC is 24 months
Pack that baby up in a container ship it to the UK and see if they come after you

Not really, walked in on the Friday, applied on the Saturday, approved for loan on the Monday through the dealership first time.

Dealership never asked about length of my work permit, only way the bank knows I am temporary is with the 9 on my SIN.

Maybe I should also add that I have another 1 year work permit to activate and intend on applying for PR in June this year. I live in Calgary work in O&G so my salary is not bad.

Obviously I need to move to Calgary then. Quebec is dead and being made redundant as a geophysicist / geologist was quite a shock to me!

Calgary isn't much better at the moment, very slow.

Ugh, I wish that wasn't the case! There's literally no jobs here in Quebec - even my colleagues each with more than 15 years of experience can't get anything. Calgary was going to be my geoscience 'land of opportunity.' Better than bankruptcy!

Would never dream for spending $30k on a car. What is wrong with second hand?

Good thing not everyone has the same dreams as you then or we would be walking everywhere.

Remind me, where do second hand cars come from?

I would never dream of being seen dead in a Jeep Wrangler, whether new or second hand.
