getting british birth certificate
 

i am about to give birth in april, i want to get a british birth certificate for my son and i have trawled the internet and can't find anywhere how to do this. i would appreciate if someone could let me know.

You can't get a birth certificate from a country you're not born in. Your son will have a Canadian birth certificate. You can get your son a passport after you've got his Canadian certificate (I gather than takes an eternity??) - see http://www.britainincanada.org/ and click on "Consular & Visa Services" for details.

thanks for that quick reply, no wonder i couldn't find the info!!!! we have a slight problem, he is due 4th april, we fly out to italy, we are relocating, on
22nd may, i am now very worried the british passport will not be here in time, i better fax the consulate, as no one will speak to you and you can't email them.... very frustrating. thanks again.

Actually you can get a British-style birth certificate from the British consular authorities (in most countries) if the child is a British citizen.

However as the standard of birth registration in Canada is similar to that of the UK, this service is not offered for British citizen children born in Canada. (it is available in the US).

A consular birth certificate is not needed to get the child a British passport, but they will want to see the Canadian long form birth certificate. Plus parents UK birth or naturalisation certificates.

will i have to register the baby as a british citizen, i am a bit confused as to the procedure for this, because the conculate at ottawa has a fee of $64.50 on their site and the british have a form on their site, if i have to register the birth in britain i'm flipped, as we are flying to italy when the baby is 7 weeks old.

I thought you weren't allowed to fly when you're so pregnant, have I got this wrong?

Not if at least one parent is a British citizen born or naturalised in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. Just apply for the child to have a British passport. Check the website to see what documentation will be required to support the passport application.

However you may be over-optimistic if you think his Canadian birth documentation will be issued quickly.

And have you thought about the consequences of abandoning your Canadian resident status? assuming you are not Canadian citizens?

chears for that, we live on prince edward island, i have rang and spoke to margaret at the office and she assures me it will be issued immediately, she's my neighbours cousin. thats how it is here!! and yes i will be flying when the baby is 7 weks old, so hopefully i won't be pregnant anymore;-)

In that case, PEI is more efficient than Ontario, for example.

You should make sure your child gets a Canadian passport before leaving too.

See if you can get the 8 week shots done early. If you are delivered late, you may have a problem as most airlines will not fly babies before eight weeks. I flew with one of mine at 7 weeks - huge fuss about permission to fly, vaccinations and medical insurance. The only problem being I can't for the life of me remember where I was headed, but I am pretty sure it was the UK via Amsterdam.

Thats what I thought too? Third trimester cut off or something innit?

American college of OB-Gyn does not recommend flying after 36 weeks, some airlines wont let you board within a month of the due date, for others its a week. Best be sure in advance I guess.

I took mine at 6wks on BMI, no fuss by anyone (except the businessman who I accidentally flashed whilst trying to feed the baby) and no docs needed. I think BA will book babies 48hrs old and upwards.

No docs? Im sure you need a passport at least now....which given the pace of birth certificates and passport applications makes 6 weeks virtually impossible now?
