General advice needed for IT worker..
 

Morning everyone,


I and my fiancée have wanted to move to Canada for around 8 years now.

We previously considered applying quite a few years ago but decided it would be easier and better if we worked for a few more years in the UK to grow our savings, gain more work experience and qualifications.

The time has now come for us to start looking at the moving process; we understand it can take a few years to go through the motions so we would like to get things going ASAP.


I've noticed from the CIC website that IT jobs have now been removed from the FSW list which is very frustrating as this is the field I work in (networking, telecoms, etc), although I also have business and management experience from the past 8 years, not sure if this will help.


My fiancée is a fully qualified accountant and is currently in the process of turning her ACCA into a CGA as such. Looking at the FSW list she won't have any issues getting on the FSW or getting work when in Canada.

I guess I'm really after advice on what I can do, if anything?
Can my fiancée apply and somehow carry me on her application? I'm very confident that once in Canada I could get a job quite easily (have researched with agencies and job sites etc based on my knowledge and experience).

What are my options, if I actually have any?

Do I simply have to wait for "IT" to re-appear on the FSW list?

Would it make a different if I was married to my fiancée?

Should I get my fiancée to apply under the FSW scheme then for myself apply for a temporary resident visa and hope to find an employer in Canada who will try and get a LMO for me (what are the chances of this??)?

Your partner should appy as the principal applicant, and you as the accompanying 'spouse'. You do not need to be married.

I agree that it does not have IT occupations. Meanwhile it also does not have Accounting occupations. So please make sure about Accounting occupations as per the above posts.

Hi Aaron, and welcome to the forum.

As has been pointed out to you, Accountants was also one of the occupations removed on 26th June, so neither your job or your other half's is on 'the list' anymore.

So, you need to look at other visa options. All are going to be trickier, but there are other ways to get to Canada. Have a read of the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) to figure out which visa may be possible.

And as has been said before, you can probably go on the same visa application. You either need to be married, or to have lived together for a year or more, but if the latter is the case then you can just go on her visa application, or vice versa.

I was hoping she would fall into the 1122 Professional Occupations in Business Services to Management area...

Hmm not good... Shame it has been made so difficult, I can understand the reasoning however there should be other factors taken into consideration other than which bucket your job title falls into!

I'm a Senior Tranisition Engineer for example, I could probably somehow twist that into the above NOC..


So our only options are to get temporary visa's, move to Canada and hope to find someone willing to hire us on the LMO route?

What are the chances of employers actually wanting to do that? I know in England [as someone who hires people myself] there is a bit of a stigma attached to hiring anyone on a temporary visa/work visa...

How often do they review "the list", is there any chance of accountant/IT occupations being re-listed?

If her duties match those listed under that NOC code, she's definitely not an Accountant!

There are........that's what the points are for! ;) It used to be that anybody with 67 points or more could apply, but obviously the economic climate changed considerably, and so CIC decided that 'the list' was needed as well to ensure that only those with skills actually needed in Canada were eligible.

In to which NOC? Again, I'd be very surprised if any of your duties in an IT related role match any of the NOC's on 'the list'.

That's one option, among others. That's going to be the toughest route though, so you might want to look at Bunac if you're young enough, or a study permit, or the Nova Scotia Community Identified Stream, or something like an investor visa if you have the funds.

Well, you need the job before you get the visa. So you need the job offer, then a LMO, then you can apply for a TWP.

Nobody knows. It's anticipated that the list will change again next June, but that's only a guess. Personally, I very much doubt that anything related to IT will be on the next list, as it's just not an occupation needed in Canada at the moment (have a search of the forum for recent threads about how dire most of the IT industry is over there), but it's possible Accountants will be put back on.

Agencies are a 110% waste of time here tbh...... I learnt that the hard way..... In terms of IT there are so many over qualified people here and when it comes to the hiring process the company can and will be picky on who they want to hire, they can be as they have so many qualified people to choose from and preference is given to canadian citizens who have this canadian experience. In terms of accountancy again i have a friend who is fully qualified and been living in Vancouver for a few years now and has had to change career as he could not find anything in his field. These are just example titles (as all NOC codes have), and don't actually mean the person qualifies though, even if that is their job title. They must prove they do at least half of the 'main duties' listed to qualify. I really don't see how an Accountant would come under that NOC code as they just wouldn't do the duties.

Why? If it's a life long dream then you'll need more determination that that!
There are over 50 different routes to a visa for Canada, so if you don't qualify as a Skilled Worker that's only one way - and lots of others to explore.

Why not consider another way, including some of the ones I listed in my post earlier? If you're prepared to give up that easily, then are you sure it was something you really wanted?

What sucks for the OP is that if they'd applied a couple of years ago when they thought about it they'd be getting, or even already have, their visa's right now.

Christmasoompa - I've looked at the other routes and they appear to be aimed at students. The risk involved in simply going to Canada and hoping to find an employer who will get us an LMO seems too high from what I am reading... The only other options I can see which are "safe" is to save up $300,000 and enter as an investor.
