Surely one would go to Montreal or Boston, use a credit card and haul the stuff back by truck.

Most of the major stores offer different credit plans, but it will be difficult when you first get there as you wont have a credit history. If you open a bank account you could ask for a line of credit that will help you out, until you've built up a good credit record. Again, you will probably get a credit card, but find the limit is around $1000. We had a lot of help from RBC when we first moved to NS. I know OH felt he'd really arrived the day he finally got a Sears card
it all depends how much you want to pay, what sort of quality etc. We bought a few electrical things online from Sears.

be careful though if you buy from their outlet store as goods from there apparently have no guarantee, but you can get some good bargains on furniture at the branch at Halifax Shopping Centre (behind Walmart)
They often have specials that are worth looking at, I see at the moment it's all major appliances, and they do deliver but you have to pay. Think it was $50
Surplus Freight, is also worth looking at and they have a shop in Burnside, Dartmouth

Again, they will deliver but you have to pay.
Other furniture stores that come to mind are Leon's, Gallery 21, and Walmart
There are some second hand shops such as Wysebuys, again in Dartmouth

This time of year there are also garage sales in all areas, which can be a good way of stocking up on things you need. The Sportsplex in Dartmouth often has auctions on Saturday mornings too. Deatails of that and garage sales are usually in Thursday's edition of Halifax Chronicle newspaper. Also stores like Sobeys and Superstore have notice boards advertising things people want to sell.

There are plenty of furniture shops at Bayers Lake. You could get everything you need to furnish a house from the stores there as long as you are not looking for something unique.

Furniture in NS.
Dozens of places. From national chains like The Brick, Leon's, and the dept. stores such as The Bay and Sears to locally owned stores. Everything from
cheap junk to high end. A quick check of the Halifax yellow pages shows more than 50 furniture retailers not counting the dept. stores.

Hi
We furnished a whole house back in april. We went through the Brick in Bayers lake. We made contact in plenty of time and the assistant (Terry Schellman)was very good (well we were talking $$$$$$!). We had specific requirements with budget and especially delivery time. We placed the order back in January with an April delivery. All items were ordered and stored in the Dartmouth warehouse. We requested a particular day and were given a morning time slot. They arrived at about 10 and unloaded, unpacked and put most of the furniture together (there were a couple of items they weren't allowed to assemble) and took all their rubbish away with them. We were very impressed, so much so we went into the store to say thanks to the manager and she was shocked that we weren't coming to complain!
We also got a discount on all items and a couple of specials with a free plasma TV. I did a scout around in November and was surprised at the apathy of alot of the sales people. The only other ones that impressed were Ashley and sears, both in Bayers Lake. Price wise all were similar (Ashley were cheapest). The clincher for us was The Brick did electricals so it was a one stop shop.
My advise would be to shop around, give plenty of warning and keep reiterating delivery times!
Hope this helps

This chain constantly changes it's stock so they have different ranges in every few months and great sales. If you are looking for something contemporary or a little different.

We had the opposite experience, with them delivering incorrect items at incorrect times and items not up to a decent quality, falling apart etc, so much so the whole order went back, and I reordered alot of the same items cheaper at leons, and the poor quality items changed to a different brand for cheaper at leons, with exceptional service and delivery within 5 minutes of agreed time.
