Fruit situation in Ottawa, ONT
It sounds trivial but I am used to eating a lot of fruit (and some vergetable - though with that I am more flexible).
Please can you let me know the availability of the following in or near Ottawa, ONT? (a) Oranges (navel) (b) Bananas (c) Rhubarb Also, are they available all year round, or just in the summer? |

Rhubarb is hard to find, only available in season and $6 for three stalks.

There isn't any fruit in Canada. The locals get their vitamin C by sucking on pine cones.

The grocery store. I haven't seen a grocery store yet that doesn't stock bananas and oranges year round.
Rhubarb will he harder, its more of a specialty and seasonal. |

Re: Fruit situation in Ottawa, ONT
Thanks - thats really helpful.
I was worried about the rhubarb situation - especially out of season. In the UK I am used to eating it most days. I will have to think about freezing a goodly supply in the summer. Coconuts I assume are also available, is a little bit "specialty". It must feel funny sitting in such a cold place chewing on a shard of "the Caribbean nut". |
Re: Fruit situation in Ottawa, ONT
Fruit selection here is not bad, seen some fruit sold here and not in the UK and don't ask me to name them cos I am no good with names. Lots of people where I live have rhubarb growing in their gardens and I have been given a bit and have thought about planting some of my own but may do that later

Re: Fruit situation in Ottawa, ONT
Yes, growing might be an option, then storing. Either freezing in bags, or else stewing/pickiling it in jars for the lon winter. It is part ofmy daily routine, so I don't want to give up on it. 'm not especially looking forward to new fruits. I do like rhubarb, oranges, bananas, and someitmes coconut.
