If it was closer to civilisation and had a cleaner image, they wouldnt have to pay high school grads $40 an hour to be a fitters apprentices, and it would lose the one appealing thing it has going for it...good money.

You can work in parts of the old USSR for $8000 tax free if it was all about money. Coming over is about work, but more importantly to have a life with the family.

That surely is the most important thing ?!!!

My sis moved to Edmonton for approx 10 years, but came back, (she also has a great job in fort). I have visited the fort plenty and there is nothing to write home about and the highway is such a drag. Shops are pretty useless even though there are a good few of them and anything decent required needs to be purchased in Edmonton. I have often contemplated emmigrating to Canada but would never go as far north as fort McMurray. I say commute, earn some decent money and then get out!
We have been living in Fort for the past 6 months or so.I come from Singapore and experenced the winter for the first time.It was pretty cold but the same as Edmonton. If U are dressed in layers,it wouldn't be that bad. There are supermarkets here and the town is really booming right now with many construction and it is slowly becoming crowded.I know of many families who have been here for pretty long and like it here.U can earn some decent money, stay for a couple of years and then go to a place of yr choice after a couple of years.

I've got to say.....i keep reading a lot of bad comments about fort mcmurray but its not going to put me off, can only try it and if dont like it then can always move. Dont think you can make a judgement on all of the comments that are made, you need to visit and see for yourself.

I keep reading that there is a big drug problem - can anybody put this in to perspective for me? In the uk we have lots of areas with bad drug problems which would put yoff ging to certain areas but not to whole cities!!!!

Absolutely visit and see for yourself - I would like to know how many of the people who make the negative comments have actually been here let alone lived here. I think if you commute or live out at camp it is in no way the same as actually being part of the community and living here with your family. We live in a great family neighbourhood and are perfectly happy here.

Yes there are drugs but the same as anywhere - if you know where to look you will find them - people seem to enjoy blowing this all out of proportion.

People in BP I know working out of BAKU, they earn $8000 a MONTH tax free, plus work a month out month home rota.

If you are chasing money then there are a lot of places where you want to go not Canada. ANGOLA is the next big money place, but there are armed escorts with machine guns - I would rather a family life in Canada anyday and die poor !!

I will get in touch with a guy I know of in BP who I was a trainee with. He heads recruitment and I will PM you with details. By the way are you an Operator ? Fitter ?

There are 4 people I know from BP Baglan Bay (RIP) who are out in BAKU. This is not pulling anyones chain. As I said I will send an email and get back to you soon with info.

There is huge money in the Oil Industry if you are prepared to give up life and work in some dangerous places.

Why do you think the way it is in Iraq at present people still take a chance and go there ?

One word - - - MONEY

To give the poster an idea, he should search Fort McMurray as somewhere on here there should be a thread from last year where someone asked the same question.....I will give the response now that I gave then.

My husband is a heli pilot, he was offered work from there and for good money, when he accepted the boss rang and asked to speak to him, I answered the phone and we got chatting, when the boss knew the age of the kids, and that we were looking at moving somewhere to say not just move around from pillar to post, he told my OH that there was no way he could send him there, his conscience wouldn't let him do it, a year on they were still advertising in that area..........so when a boss tells you that, well I think that says a lot eh?

I also spoke to a female police officer last summer originally from the town, she and her OH did what they could to get out, she lives down in Med Hat now, and her parents are thinking of doing the same. That's all I can tell you about the place. I would look up crime stats etc, cost of living, and all that Jazz and then sit down with your OH and look at your priorities. If you think its the right place, reccie it and go for it, after all, who's to say apart from you if it's right for you or not.
