Default Flying unaccompanied from the UK

Just a very quick one if anyone has any experience of this !

I would like to know what age does my son who lives with his mother in the UK have to be before he can fly unaccompanied from the UK to Canada ?

He is currently twelve years old.

Thanks everyone,

Can't help you about the age thing but my daughter flew unaccompanied when she was 12. She flew from New York to Manchester with British Airways. She was accompanied from leaving my husband in NY until I met her at Manchester. She had an empty row of seats to herself...someone tried to move into one of the seats and they were told to move.

BTW what's with the sheffspurs...it should be sheffowls.

Check with the airlines, ie Air Canada 12 and up can fly alone.

Even if child is of age to travel alone (ie, without escort) you should try to ensure the flight is direct and avoid connections, even if it means a drive at the end of the flight.

Zoom allow unaccompanied minors. My 12 year old son flew from the UK to Canada with them last year.

A UM used to be from age 6 to 15 with many airlines, however that is changing now. Referring to an unaccompanied minor means they are traveling alone and escorted by airline personnel (you pay for this service), the receiving party needs to show ID and the airline hand them over. Not all carriers offer this service now.

Traveling alone, my daughter was 15 the first time and we made sure she had been met at the other end. Regardless of any rules we would not have sent her alone at any younger age. She traveled as a UM from 12 to 15.

My son was at boarding school in the UK when we lived in Halifax and flew home to visit us every school holiday as an unaccompanied minor (from the age of 12) with Air Canada.

In general we didn't have too many problems apart from the time they left him sitting at Heathrow and forgot to board him on the plane Luckliy he's a switched on kid and got himself on - nobody noticed at either end and he got himself through Immigration. No appologies from AC either! Luckily in Halifax we could take him up to the gate and see him board for ourselves.

Don't forget to register for airmiles! my son accrued several thousand miles on his travels!

Air Canada take unaccompanied minors from eight years old. Up until recently, it was five years old, believe it or not.
