Looks like I'm going to have to delay my trip by a few months now, but the cheapest route seems to be with V Australia from LAX to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne - around US$650 e/w. If flying from Canada you'd still need to get to LAX, around CA$800 in late-December, but frequent flyer points can get you a return for just the tax if you have them.

QANTAS own the pacific route.....so you'll have to pay

Having flown BNE > LAX a couple of times now with V-Australia, I strongly recommend them - I'm 6'3" & 110kg and have been very comfortable in cattle class.
