Flyglobespan Launches New Route from Halifax to Glasgow
Good news for those in Nova Scotia...
"HIAA announced today the introduction of a new transatlantic service from Halifax to Glasgow, Scotland.
Flyglobespan will operate the weekly seasonal service to Glasgow beginning in late May 2009. The non-stop service departs Glasgow on Wednesdays at 1:55 p.m., arriving in Halifax at 4:25 p.m.; and returns to Glasgow at 5:10 p.m. on Thursdays.
"Increasing air service to Europe is one of our key priorities, especially in light of the recent Canada-European Union Blue Sky agreement," says Tom Ruth, HIAA's President & CEO. "Halifax's strategic geographic location makes it an ideal connecting point by air between Europe and North America. And in this particular case, it's wonderful to be making the connection with one of Nova Scotia's founding cultures."
"It is only right that Scotland's airline should be flying from one of the most densely populated Scottish ex-pat areas in the world," insists Tom Dalrymple, Globespan Chairman. "The Globespan Group has now been involved in the Canadian travel market for over 30 years. I am pleased that by offering this flight next year we can allow more people, with and without Scots ancestry, to come and join the Homecoming celebrations."
"Strengthening transportation links and focusing marketing efforts on cities with direct air access to Nova Scotia are a key part of our tourism plan," says Bill Dooks, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "Any opportunity to increase air access to Nova Scotia is welcome, especially from the U.K. and Europe which are growth markets for us."
One-way tickets start at CAN$149 plus taxes. To book your tickets today visit www.flyglobespan.ca."

Anyone travelling with flyglobespan had better have a very flexible itinerary. Delays and cancellations are the norm - without warning. Last year, several times they left passengers stranded at Vancouver airport, and I believe the airport authority was planning on cancelling their landing privileges. Cheap and not cheerful. But you get what you pay for.

Even if Globespan are crap its still great news in the sense that it will give Air Canada some competition once again. They have been basically able to charge what they like since Zoom went under. Air Canada are still adding on a $320 fuel surcharge per person on flights to the UK from Halifax even though fuel prices are now rock bottom again!
