Flights - Return or Single?

So I`m looking at flights from Dublin to Edmonton or Calgary in June and theyre crazy - it appears that a single is as expensive (or possibly moreso) than a return

Obviously I could book a single but what if I took a return and just booked a random date later in the year which I most likely wouldnt want or need?

Would doing this and not turning up for the flight create any issues? Are such actions frowned upon by airlines or are they happy enough as they already have the cash?

If I did choose this route is there anything I can do to "preserve" the flight so that it can be used at some point (like a credit) - or is that simply not an option

Sorry if these questions seem daft but I`ve anytime before Ive only been going to wherever for a short time and had a definite return date so booking flights was easy - my move to Canada means that while I will most likely return at some point to visit theres no set date

Thanks in advance

Try booking an open end style of ticket or one which you can change for a small fee.

Most major ones do such as Air Canada, BA, Lufthansa, Delta.
Air Transat not sure. ask a travel agent or look at each airlines website for more details on T & C

I`ll do that - cheers

Still don`t understand why they charge a premium for a single fare (if they didn't I wouldn`t have this dilemma)
